Best codec package?

Need a good codec package that plays most major types (divx, xvid, etc.)

I don't want to spend time to download a codec for each type of file I run into

there is no one codec pack which solves everything, unfortunately. There are only "recipies" for getting a working configuration that plays most anything.

I've had bad luck with codec packs. So far I've only needed ffdshow. If I need a particular one, I will install it manually.

Btw, the one that gave me problems was Nemo's codec pack.

Nimo codec pack is DISASTEROUS if you use default installation settings. There are settings you can use to fix it and make it decent.

Theres no need for a codec pack. There are 4 codecs you need to play just about any video - ffdshow, AC3, divx, and xvid. Just go download those.

ffdshow has codecs for divx, xvid, 3vix mpeg1, mpeg2, and so on. AC3 would only be needed for those lame attempts at preserving 5.1 audio.

ffdshow seems to have lower resource consumption, and better post processing.
