Friend of mine wants me to build him a machine for some games. He plays with a friend online. I dont do games so I am at a loss as to what video card might be a good one. Was looking at maybe a Duron 700, 128-192megs ram and Asus board. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. He doesn't really want to spend a whole lot. Will be useing a lot out of his old machine so we may keep cost around $600

Try the PowerColor Evil Kyro 64mb card. I currently have one and can tell you without a doubt , YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

Just my $.01 cent worth (coud'nt afford the full two pennies as I am always broke)

Uhhh, Radeon DDR:)

If you want the cost for around $100 then go with the GF2MX, but for $50 more the 32MB Radeon DDR is a much better board. Great 2D on nearly all monitors, best video playback of any consumer video card, excellent gaming performance and feature support.

Lemme think(these numbers are off the top of my head so no flames please)-

PS/Case ~$50

Duron 750 w/heatsink and fan~ $100

Asus A7V mobo ~$130

256MB PC 133 RAM ~$120

Radeon 32MB DDR ~$150

Seismic Edge Soundcard ~$50

I know you said that you were keeping many of the parts, and I upped the RAM and CPU a bit(I would reccomend strongly going with 256MB. RAM is so cheap now it is very little extra in terms of cost and already games are using far more then 128MBs), but that comes in at ~$600 and that should be fairly close to current market prices.

Thanks for the responces. I will go over it with him. Now my only problem is I start wanting to make me another machine. More fun spending someone else's money.

$100 - CL Annhilator PRO GeForce DDR [Non MX]- Used, up for sale right now in the FS/FT
$150 - Radeon 64MB Engineering Sample -OR- CL GTS2 32MB - In the FS/FT
$200 - CL GTS2 64MB - In the FS/FT
Then there is the Ultra, but that's half your budget. If you need anything GTS I can take care of you, otherwise, Viperoni and others have posted about the 64MB Radeon. You can do much better than an MX, no matter what route you choose.

I'd say KYRO.. good performance, especially with the latest driver, lots of features and dirt cheap.. best value card IMO.
