I mean, other than fire and nuking them from space.

I've mostly ceded the back hall of my apartment over to the spiders and let them be, since I never use the back entrance. I do, however, use the back hall for some long-term storage whose time has finally come

I've had an air conditioner back there for a year and a half (last summer was so cold that I never had to take it out). it's been scorching lately, though, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to install it soon. in my mind, this think is now lousy with spiders and I'm going to be attacked as soon as I touch it. any recommendations on chemicals with which to arm myself before I brave the dangers of my back hallway?

None. The chemicals are worse for you than the spiders. If you really want to, vacuum the AC unit before you pick it up. It's a good idea anyway to get rid of dust.

Stay away from cardboard boxes, use some regular home defense spray like 10 bux nice size bottle at home depot or Kmart. I just use a glove and smash them with my hands really not worried about spiders they dont just go around biting people unless your torturing them.

spiders eat the bad bugs
that's why I leave them alone as long as they stay out of my way... but if there's a dozen spiders chilling inside my AC, I'm not going to gently escort them all outside.

I rely on the stuff that's in hotshot to kill and deter the more venomous spiders around here, in particular black widows.

Been using glue traps for a while and they seem to work well for larger spiders and other insects as well.

vacuum is really the best idea. no mess to clean up, no chemical residue. you dont even get close to them with the attachments and arm. plus it gets the web with it. and you dust at the same time!
