Looking for good quality reliable 850 watt PSU in the gold+ or platinum area for an RTX 3080.

What are the good oems these days? Super flower? Seasonic? Something under $160 would be great.

The one I wanted was the Evga P2 850 but its like $230. I am thinking SuperFlower?

I missed the Seasonic Focus, which is on sale for $140.

So along with the first two I mentioned, these would be the ones I would buy if I needed a PSU right now.

Top tier CWT built 850w gold psu, 10 year warranty, all Japanese caps etc etc. $110 shipped.

Dont know much about CWT, they are solid? That seems like a good deal. Im leaning more towards the seasonic or superflower just for peace of mind. I wish that SuperFlower 850watt gold was on sale. Someone told me its always on sale for $110 but I just missed it.

Yup very solid PSU, just a different MSI sticker on it instead of the Enermax Revolution D.F. which is highly regarded.

I'm kind of brand-conscious about power supplies. If the builder (not necessarily the actual branded sticker) is SeaSonic or SuperFlower, I tend to trust the unit...ChannelWell can be hit or miss...but the CWT that's in my IBuyPower pre-built seems to be rock solid. (I bought a Seasonic for a replacement...but have been too lazy to make the swap)
Corsair has (or had) some excellent PSU's made by SeaSonic. My old PC is still running a Corsair HX620 made by SeaSonic...and it was installed in 2007. However...the name on the sticker can be misleading...there's no easy way for the end user to know who actually built the power supply...without good test & review sites. (Gawd I miss Johnny Guru and Oklahoma Wolf's work)

Ya. I went ahead and purchased the MSI one just to test it out, if the fan is loud which I saw some complaints on, ill return it and go with a SuperFlower or Seasonic.

One other follow up question that many probably wont know. What Brand and models are better for less aggressive fan profiles and quiet operation? I run a EVGA G2 650w atm and have loved it. I dont think I have ever heard it.

But this changes even moving to 850watt and different brands. Is any particular model of Superflower or Seasonic better for quiet operation? Corsair? Anyone....

Corsair's RMx (2018 version) was the quietest, but they just updated the product line, and the noise level increased quite a bit due to them using their own magnetic fan.

The Super Flower Leadex III line has three fan profiles a user can choose from using the switch on the back of the unit, so it's probably the most customizable when it comes to how quickly the fan ramps up.

Alright. Thanks for the input.

Its difficult cause I love my Evga G2 650 but the line just isnt made anymore and I need 850w. Ive read the fan in the super flower III line is the same fan from the Evga G3 line and the G3 line are known for having loud fans. I was avoiding the G3 line because of that. So that concerns me a little but.... I did read a review on the super flower III and it still had close to the lowest dba on the charts.

I was contemplating buying a used EVGA G2 850w that someone has on offerup that looks like it has minimal usage and has all cables. Its only being sold for $65 + shipping, but then I am taking a chance buying off offerup.

Hard to decide. I am leaning towards the Super Flower Leadex III.

I thought you already bought the MSI unit?

I personally wouldn't buy a used PSU. By the time you pay the shipping charge, you probably aren't far off from the price if you bought one new from Newegg. They 850w unit was just on sale the last few days for $109 with free shipping at Newegg.

I have a Seasonic Prime gold unit, and based on all the reviews of it, it supposedly has an aggressive fan curve. I guess it could if I was running it a 80% + load, but under normal use, I never hear the fan at all, and I built my PC to be silent. I think as long as the PSU manufacturer doesn't set the fan to turbo mode with lower power loads, you shouldn't notice it over any of your other fans.

Edit:

I just remembered I have a EVGA G3 in my wife's computer in her office, and I don't ever notice it running when I am doing updates and such on her PC. Both of my kid's computers also have EVGA PSUs in them (one with a G2 and one with a P2).

My wife's case is a Fractal Design Meshify C, and both of the kid's cases are Fractal Design Define R5.

I decided to return the MSI psu to amazon. I didnt even open it. I read some people say it has a really loud fan and I dont know that unit well so... I decided I want to go with the ones I know better.

Dont think a used PSU is worth it huh? I am tempted because its an EVGA G2 850 that he claims is unused and has all cables for $65 + $7 for shipping. That seems like a good deal for an old model Super Flower unit. However, I did read even the G2' series models above 650w had louder fans or more aggressive fan profiles so were actually quite a bit louder. Its hard to decide what to do here. That is the same issue I wanted to avoid with the Evga G3 units, which are also known for having a very aggressive fan profile. I dont want a PSU with an aggressive fan profile.

I do realize that for the most part the fan shouldnt come on to often, but I have also never owned a higher end graphics card past my 3060 ti or a power supply over 650w. I need a unit so if I ever happen to get a RTX 3080 I can actually run it.

I also just read a review on the Super Flower III 850w on https://www.techpowerup.com/review/super-flower-leadex-iii-850-w/ and it says the performance is actually a bit lower than others and has some issue with the +12v OCP.

To me, no.

I'd rather buy a new unit when it's on sale over a used PSU.

Even when I gamed with my old GTX 1080ti card, I still never noticed the Seasonic PSU mentioned above being noisy or noticeable in any way. I even used to do Folding @ Home on it for significant periods, and that placed a good sized load on my PC, and I still couldn't hear the PSU fan running.

Do you think there is any real world benefit or reason to go with a Platinum or Titanium unit over a 80+ Gold? There is definitely a price difference, I just dont know how much real world cost is saved over a year by going with platinum or titanium. Probably not much?

And thanks for the input man.

Not usually.

As long as you're running the PSU in the "sweet spot" (which is usually in the 20% - 80% range), the efficiency differences are minimal.

Now if the platinum or titanium unit was just a small price increase over the gold, I'd consider it. But outside of $10 - $20 higher than a comparable gold rated unit, it's not worth it for most people based on the pricing premium those units currently command.

Yeah. It seems like any unit in the platinum area is around a $40-80 price increase versus gold. Its not that much money more but....
Everyone makes their own determination if the price is "worth it" to them.

So if read some reviews on higher rated efficiency power supplies, and feel like you get your money's worth at what they are priced at, go for it. Outside a small price difference, they aren't worth it to me.

Any idea what internals are used in the EVGA P2 850w? I just saw the G3 gold and P2 850w are on sale on EVGA.com and there is also a 10% off code so, I might jump on the P2 850.

Is it super flower or fultron garbage? I read evga PSU's are now fultron or whatever.

The P2 was made by Super Flower, and I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe they changed the manufacturer to a different company. So any of the hardware review sites that reviewed the P2 should still be accurate.

I was asking because the EVGA P2 850 has double ball bearing, versus what I normally see these days stating FDB or HDB. I also noticed the P2 850 is 140mm fan versus others which are 130-135mm.

Do you think the EVGA P2 850w for about $150 after the 10% off code including tax is worth it or lets say the Super flower 850 gold for $130 after tax? Or would you still go for a gold model for $110-120 before tax/shipping?

I'd personally go with the 850w Leadex III when it's on sale for $109.99.

There is not enough value for me to go up $40 for a platinum power supply (especially since it's based on their older Leadex II platform).
