My HD containing all my mp3's crashed recently, most of which I downloaded many, many years ago. Now I want to rebuild my collection. I can't imagine paying .99 for each song, I had over 5,000 tracks..

Any suggestions?

If you downloaded them many, many years ago, odds are you didn't pay. :)

Amazon is my favorite. No DRM, decent bitrate. Still close to 99c a track, though.

Your other option is to go and buy used CDs and rip them yourself. That will almost always come out cheaper, but with the added cost of your time.

Well if you don't want to pay per song then you'll need to land on a good subscription based site, which I don't know how many there are. I like Amazon for their non-DRM and higher quality stuff, but I think they're pay per song which adds up if you need to buy in bulk (these are alternator sized chunks of data people).

You can always go with subscription route and pay a monthly fee to download as many albums as your MP3 player holds. Zune is one of these services.

This. Napster is another possible alternative. I think you can get a free trial period where you can pretty much download whatever you want.

Get Napster for $5/month for unlimited rental listening of millions of songs on 3 PCs.

If you want to download (rental) music to a compatible player (not iPods) then Napster2Go, Rhapsody or Zune Pass for $15/month.

Yeah sounds like a subscription service would be your best bet, you're not going to find any legitimate stores selling MP3s for much less than $0.99.

For buying MP3s, check out Amazon.

edit: mp3shake.com is one of those shady Russian MP3 download sites, don't buy from them. Like I said before, you're not going to find any legit site selling MP3s much cheaper than $0.99 per track.

Sounds just like allofmp3, which got shutdown for illegally selling music.

It isnt a very flashy site so it could go that route but its been good to me so far for odd ball songs. I've used them for 6months or so without any probs but yeah it could be illegal.

It is illegal, and none of the money goes back to the labels or the artists. You might as well just torrent the songs for free, because paying for them from that site is doing nothing but lining the pockets of criminals.

I've bought stuff from Amazon cus they're DRM free but needing that many songs, I'd go subscription like others said.
