Best cheapest large capacity SSD?

The UltraII series for the 500GB area ($179), UltraII and EVO for 1TB($369). More than that don't seem to be in wide circulation. PCI-e SSDs are up to 6TB though for $10k. 😛

What is your definition of 'large capacity' ?

Even though it is a broad term, I think it can be figured out by itself:

Mechanicals are right now at 6TB.
I quick search shows that a Red is 286,74 € at that capacity.

SSD (SATA) are around 2TB.
I quick search shows that at 1TB is at 350.00€

That being said, we can say that the most common capacities are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Low, mid and high capacity. Im looking at a 128GB for price, 256GB would be pointless for me, and the 512GB is what Im looking for but expensive. I want to see what options I have.

I hope that clears it up a bit 🙂

+1 The 512GB variant of crucial's mx100 offers the best price/GB overall, but you should check local prices as it may vary based on your location.
I do not think that this is the best time to go beyond a 512GB SSD if you cherish price/GB a lot. I think that in about an year, 512GB SSDs will be priced at current 256GB level.

I see it at 187,70 €

I probably wouldn't waste my time with 128GB SSDs right now, even if they're a bit cheaper than 256 GB ones. The marginal cost savings are offset by the significant benefits of additional capacity and the additional performance from parallelism that comes along for the ride.

As a straight-up OS drive in something like an HTPC or GP PC (browser, YouTube'r, etc) a 128GB is perfect, even if you are missing out on some of the performance. In real world use I doubt those users would see a difference. For any other use, a 256GB is the minimum.

You're almost certainly right, I just feel super dirty recommending someone shell out, taking the MX100 as an example, ~$70 for a 128GB when you can regularly get the 256GB for ~$100. You're getting A LOT for +$30!

Agree
128GB has turned out to be perfect for a "set it and forget" type box as long as you store stuff elsewhere. However, I would have to have a very specific use case prior to buying a 128GB at this point.

Best and cheapest are usually mutually exclusive.

Best and cheapest given the intended purpose... 😉

I've got 3 boxes I manage that are simple PC's or a simple business machine... they all have 128GB's (an M500, and 2 Intel 530's) and none of them are over 50GB... and none of them are performance machines. Well, the SSD itself makes them 'performance' machines compared to the doggy HDD they replaced. :awe:

No, I see what you are saying... it's just a few dollars more, right? But put that $30 towards more RAM or a backup HDD... but to each his own.

less than $200 lands a 480GB/512GB SSD

almost doesn't even matter if they're used or not if they were manufactured 2013 because of the newer extremely insane endurance technologies compared to 2007.

new "2014" intel 730 SSD 480GB for $200 shipped.

does anyone remember when 7200rpm 500GB HDD's were still retailed over $100?, only a few years ago?, we're talking 2010.
not to mention inflation.

the 480GB SSD will break closer to $100 by next year, quarter 4-2015.

i was at a spinning drive research facility not too long ago, and at the conference, the company claimed that 128GB SSD was still over $100 as of 2014, and that spinning drives would still endure. they were going to try and manufacture spinning drives as low as $30 for computer cloning companies.
$20 more could source an SSD at retail, before even applying the volume discounts that cloning companies could easily acquire from the warehouse.

...can't wait to finally see spinning drives die in the consumer product markets, for fvck sake.
