I'm looking to get a BYOD NAS, i mainly want to use it to back up my words, and data files at home, but i want to access it at work so that i can upload data files from work to be used at home, so i guess it needs to do ftp well (?), i'm not a networking guru, so i need somthing that is secure (requires log in etc..), and easy to set up, i also don't want a loud NAS, i've seen some reviews on ones i've looked at that say the fans are loud, many of then also don't seem to do ftp well. i'm looking for actual user experience.

help please

I've heard good things about the Buffalo NAS.

The one I'm looking at is the D-Link DSM-G600 but I've heard the fan is kinda loud. It's on sale now for $99 at Circuit City. It has some nice looking features. Does FTP. Has two additional USB ports to hook up additional USB drives. Can be used as a UPNP media server. Has both 802.11g and a gigabyte ethernet port. The enclosure holds one drive. I heard the version to get is the B1 revision. Some stores have the A revision.

Another possibility is to build your own using an old computer and a Linux distribution. That's my current setup now. I am using an old AMD K6-3 450 as my file server and a couple of old hard drives (two 5 gigs, and one 8 gigs). I don't have it setup as an external FTP server (my ISP has dynamic IP so I don't have a fixed IP to enable me to have an FTP server that the outside world can see). I'm using the Open circulation edition of Xandros 3.0 which makes setting up a file server really easy.

For the most part it suits my needs but I am curious whether the D-Link would provide me with better speeds.
