Got a Menards nearby? We bought simple non-keyed ones Kwikset handles for around $11 a piece for a polished bronze finish. Keyed ones were around $14.

We replaced 14 doors in the house going that route. It was about $500 for 14 different sized 6 panel doors and the handles.

This has nothing to do with your specific question, but I re-did the keyed entries to my house with Kwikset yesterday and I was impressed with them. Easy to install. I really thought the smartkey feature worked well and I set all of my locks to the same key in about 2 minutes.

I doubt that I will ever need to, but it's nice knowing that I can reset the locks to a different key whenever I want.

find a local reseller of overstock building supplies, there are some around here, they get leftover stuff from build sites/contractors and resell it at a discount

Nope. We are in N.VA near DC.

We also talked to some at eBay but they all just said their price listed is it. You think they offer some break for ordering $500 or so of knobs.

i'd go with schlage. i think some of the cheap ones can be bumped?

and from my experience the install kits are better, more secure.

As far as exterior goes, you may want to consider a manufacturer that offers a lifetime guarantee on the finish. Whatever your finish of choice is.

I'm on my second set here. I've gone inexpensive both times. They just don't hold up. This over 20 years. I'm not into polishing brass.

Oh, and don't think each set held up for 10 years. More like three.

Edit: Just thought that living in Michigan might factor in.

I thought just about all of them except those horribly expensive Medeco locks could be bumped.

This is true. Schlage can be bumped as easy as any other brand. The only other alternative I know of to Medeco is to go with an unusual keyway such as Best.

anyone ever used one of these or something similar? been thinking of getting one...

My thing about electric ones is why. A door lock is more for looks on most doors. I can kick in a door very easy. So all the "extras" you get from the electronic ones is just add cost and if they break cost a arm and a leg.

Thats why I want cheap. My wife wants the schlage as she likes the way they look. So if anybody have any other places for Schlage please offer them up. She is getting itchy to buy some.

For what it’s worth I’ve had pretty crap luck with my kwickset smart key handle on my main entry door. I’m on my third handle in five years. In both of the two failures that I’ve had the key got harder to turn while unlocking until it wouldn’t turn anymore. This door is also in a three season room and not subjected to the elements.

The only good thing is that I was able to buy the cheapest smart key knob and swap the broken cylinder in my handle with the one from their cheapest knob as they are all interchangeable.
