I am semi in the market for a new modem and I thought I'd see what your opinions were on the best bang for your buck internal PCI modem. I do game so I'd like something that is hardware based or if it is a Winmodem doesn't seem to be a resource hog. I'd also like it to be less than $50, the cheaper the better without giving up too much performance.

Best hardware (controller) based modem for the price that I have used:

US Robotics 2976 56K Internal PCI (OEM) Voice & FAX ....... usually less than $50. (on line or at your local pc shops)
Or the:
US Robotics 2977 56K Internal PCI (OEM) No Voice ............. a few $ less than above.

If it is just going to be used for a back-up to Cable or DSL connection then Win-Modem or AMR/CNR modems are fine.

IMHO

BTW there are V92 modems out now. Supposed to have better compression, but the ISP has to have V92 for the extra compression.

Get the Lucent WinModem. I've been using one on my second PC (Celeron 500)
for about a year without any problems. Consistant 45K connects...........

56K modems are not ground breaking technology, and it really doesn't matter what brand you go with for the most part. I've used comstar, and Pine modems in the past, and they've worked flawlessly for a couple years now. They cost about $20. USR isn't worth the extra cost anymore.

I have been using the Diamond SupraMax Modem for over a year now and it been great for dial-up. I picked mine up at Best Buy for 25.00 after MIR.

I usually get a Zoom with the LT chipset. Zoom claims better lightning protection on their modems. Last one I got was $10 refurb from NewEgg. Works fine.
