my friend is looking for the best cell phone service in the chicagoland area. what do you guys suggest?
agreed, Verizon has insane coverage, but you have to pay extra for it. Cingular has decent coverage and they only offer nationwide coverage so you don't get hit w/$.70 a min. roaming fees.Originally posted by: FleshLight
Verizon...but their rates suck and so do their phones.

I  Verizon.
for $40 a month, 400 anytime minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile and unlimited N/W plus amazing coverage. Since all my friends/family have Verizon, I never worry about minutes.

That's a plan you brag about?
EDIT: As I recall hearing Sprint is not a good choice in Chicago. I may have remembered wrong tho. Just remember that all the major carriers give you 14 days to try it out. If you aren't satisfied return it and pay for the minutes used.

Definitely not Sprint, I live about 3 miles from the Sprint World Headquarters and I get dropped calls, shotty service, low signal all the time...I think I'm going to switch to Verizon since my work gets a discount from them and I've heard mostly good things about their service and coverage.

Because your experience with Sprint in one town defines the coverage nationwide:roll:

Some areas may be good, but the fact that their service is shotty at their World Headquarters says something to me about the company...

Could be a phone issue. I read lots of forums and the conclusion I've reached is that many times its the handset, not the network. At any rate, I've yet to read about complaints about Sprint in KS.

3 different phones, all of which went in for software updates when necessary. I've got some friends with Sprint and same results. Just seems like Overland Park(where the HQ is) is a blackhole for Sprint signals...
ETA: Although I will say that Sprint has some of the coolest phones out there, so if you're a gadget freak Sprint is something to consider.
