It's definitely area specific. I get terrific service with T-mobile in Colorado, but my parents hit holes all the time in NY.

agreed, Verizon has insane coverage, but you have to pay extra for it. Cingular has decent coverage and they only offer nationwide coverage so you don't get hit w/$.70 a min. roaming fees.

Verizon has been screwing me over a lot recently. I live in the Chicagoland area and recently went on vacation out west. I was charged $66 in roaming for 96 minutes of usage even though I have a nationwide plan and it did not say roaming on my phone when I used it out there. They credited me 50-some dollars back but regardless, I should not have to go through this every month. Others months it has been minor stuff that they have been hitting me with that i have gotten most or all back. I think I am going to be checking out Cingular when my contract is up in Nov.

I  Verizon.

for $40 a month, 400 anytime minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile and unlimited N/W plus amazing coverage. Since all my friends/family have Verizon, I never worry about minutes.

That's a plan you brag about?

EDIT: As I recall hearing Sprint is not a good choice in Chicago. I may have remembered wrong tho. Just remember that all the major carriers give you 14 days to try it out. If you aren't satisfied return it and pay for the minutes used.

Uh, you call that bragging? I was merely stating what you get with the $40/month plan with Verizon. If his friend finds out a lot of friends/family he knows also have Verizon (like I did, switched from Tmobile to Verizon), it's a pretty good way to get pretty much unlimited cell phone minutes.

I have a hard time believing Verizon sucks in any major city area based on my experiences.

Definitely not Sprint, I live about 3 miles from the Sprint World Headquarters and I get dropped calls, shotty service, low signal all the time...I think I'm going to switch to Verizon since my work gets a discount from them and I've heard mostly good things about their service and coverage.

Because your experience with Sprint in one town defines the coverage nationwide:roll:

Some areas may be good, but the fact that their service is shotty at their World Headquarters says something to me about the company...

Could be a phone issue. I read lots of forums and the conclusion I've reached is that many times its the handset, not the network. At any rate, I've yet to read about complaints about Sprint in KS.

Verizon for the coverage. Cingular for fancy phones. Cingular is starting to catch up on the coverage and Verizon is starting to catch up on the phones (v710, upcoming VX8000).

HoFo is a good place to do some research.

I've stood by Verizon for over 2 years now, I cannot complain. Any time I ever had a problem they took care of it completley as I asked, no problem at all. Can't beat that.

3 different phones, all of which went in for software updates when necessary. I've got some friends with Sprint and same results. Just seems like Overland Park(where the HQ is) is a blackhole for Sprint signals...

ETA: Although I will say that Sprint has some of the coolest phones out there, so if you're a gadget freak Sprint is something to consider.

Yeah, cell service is one of those things that is hit or miss and it's different for everyone. As soon as you find someone that works, stick with 'em regardless of rep.

i lived in chicago for the past 4 years, had sprint service. it was okay, but there were alot of times that it was horrible when indoors. i only stayed with sprint because the service was much better in houston (where i'm from) and in many other cities i temporarily lived in. i heard at&t and verizon were better than sprint in chicago.
