get a lite-on :) it's cheap and good. in general, a lot of other manufacturer's will buy lite-on's and rebadge them as their own (ie - cendyne, buslink etc). i think i have read that asus sometimes uses lite-on as well. u can check the hot deals forums for all the deals on cd-rw drives. u will find within those threads whether or not the drives are lite-on's, and if they are lite-on's... how u can spot them (usually by serial number, or some labelling on the box).

Lite-on or plextor.

Here's how you can tell which. If the system in your car is more expensive than your car, then you want the plextor. If the car is more expensive than the system, then you want the Lite-on.

Also cruise the hot deals forum. Those nutjobs engineer deals so that you could prolly make money by buying a cd-rw.

yesterday, i had the pleasure of working on my gf's computer, formating, installing, ripping, and burning with a Liteon 40x12x48
i run very similar system specs and i have the plextor 40x12x40

XP install and copying file from CD to HD
- Plextor was faster by a few minutes

Burning a 700 MB data CD
- Liteon was faster by 10 seconds or so but Plex was quieter

Ripping in Secure Mode EAC
- liteon max rip 4x
- Plextor max rip 12x

Liteon is awesome for price/performance. I still think Plextor is just the hands down KING.

I agree with everyone else.....Lite-on is the way to go.

However, I used a LG 24x CDRW for several months and was very impressed. Never had a coaster and the drive is currently working great in the system I build for my brother.

Just how loud are the Lite-ons? Is it distracting like the annoying whine of a Creative CDROM?

I think my 52x Lite-on CDRW is quiet when it comes to reading and writing.

My 16x Lite-on DVD is another story, though, as the spin-up of the drive is anything but quiet. It's just an annoyance, as the performance of the DVD drive is unmatched.

So true, and this only applies to DVD not CDR.
