Best CD-player?

Im gonna go looking for a CD-rom for my box, but CDroms aren't exactly very fashionable things that you can go out and find alot of review on.
So, Im asking you peeps instead :)

Here are my priorities:
Not too loud, Im not THAT sensitive, I just don't wanna feel like there's an airstrip next to me.
Not too long spinup time, a long time ago when I didnt really care, I read about some CDs being able to begin reading before reaching full velocity, sounds nice.
Good at reading burned, scratched, etc discs.

Performance does NOT matter too much, I mean really, how often do we use these things these days?
I mostly use it cause them annoying game makers keep insisting that you keep your disc in the player while gaming, and Im too lazy to find no-CD cracks.

Now, to give you a point of reference, my current CD is an Asus 50X, the older model, I hear the newer ones are quieter.
It is too loud, not as much as a 7200 RPM CPU fan, but still, a bit loud for my tastes.
Spinup time is too long, takes forever, and spins down pretty often, so if an application does somewhat frequent reads, it will spend alot of time spinning up and down.
It's very good at reading everything I throw at it, only thing it couldn't read was my horribly scratched Fallout CD, I had to use Asus itility to set it to 4X, then it worked.
Performance is great, it's very fast once it's spun up, but as previously stated, that's not really a priority.

Any advice?

Sounds like noise is one of your main concerns. If my assumption is correct, I would suggest a LG cd-rom. Its cd-player is one of the quietest I've tried. I can't vouch for the performance though. They're all are pretty much the same to me.

Sounds good, I can get my hands on an LG 52X pretty cheap.
Do they spin up/down fast though, that's almost my main concern, seeing as it's so friggin annoying when it does that.

Then the fact that Windows nearly hangs completely every time this happens doesn't make it better :|

Thanks for the advice :)

Well, my brother has Sony 52x, and it is pretty quick when it comes to spinning up/down, at least in my opinion. And it is not very loud at all.

why not get a DVD-ROM instead of a CD-ROM. my pioneer dvd-rom works very good reads everything and it doesnt sound like a rocket about to blast off.

i second the LG...i have a 40X LG and it is much quieter than my Creative CDRW 121032...but why not spend the extra few dollars (or nothing if you get a deal) for a DVD-rom drive?

Well, I already have a DVD, a 6X Pioneer slotload.

Mainly, I want a good CDROM, rather than a DVD, for two reasons:
I always tend to go with one device for one purpose, since IMO devices that are specifically made for one thing are usually better at it than devices that do multiple things.
And, well I already have a DVD, so I can save myself $30 :)

Anyways, sounds like the LG is a good choice then, I think I'll go with it, thanks for the input :)

Like $30 at newegg, I use them all the time in boxes I build and haven't had any problems.

I purchased two Sony CDU5221 52X drives from New Egg last year. Generally I'm pleased with the drives' performance. However be aware that the CDU5221 spins at only 40X by default. You'll have to press/hold the eject button for approx. 5 seconds after inserting a CD for 52X speeds ;(
