The Rotten Apple

Not too indepth at the website, but there's a very interesting article in the latest issue of CPU magazine (which as an aside, I keep intending to subscribe to, but always forget and have to buy the latest issue at Wal-Mart.)

meh...pretty easy mod, though...I bet mine was harder...not 100% complete (the back isn't finished, but who sees the back? :p ). Mine is running mandrake right now, and I'm also using a mac multiscan 17" monitor...I even made the freakin adapter (you can buy them) :)

True story . . .

I go to a print shop to work on their networked color printer. Their digital front end is a G4 with Splash RIPs. They need me to install an additional 256MB of memory so that they can run the printer calibration software. No problem, right?

At the time I'd never had a G4 in my hands, I'd seen pictures and stuff, but that was it. So I whip out my torx driver and go to town. 30 minutes later, I still don't have the GD case open, and I'm getting a little frustrated. So I reach down to put one of the panels back on . . . and bump the latch up a little bit. Ding, it falls open. Talk about pissed . . .

Matt, have you read the CPU magazine article? It sounds like it wasn't an "easy mod"; they had to modify the motherboard slightly, they had to bleach the paint off of the acrylic panels, etc. Maybe my concept of "difficult" is lower than yours, though. ;)

X-Man: ever try to open an older powermac? those things are really bomb proof. its like u take off the plastic cover... there its another metal shell inside thats next to impossible to crack open. those g4's r light years ahead of those old powermacs.

I know, I know :p Why exactly did they take off the sound/midi header? Just cause they didn't have a slot for it (lame)?

w3rd...mine is pop front off (hard), pop off top drive cover (harder), slide top back and remove, slide plastic side off and remove, unscrew 8 screws on metal side, slide back and remove... :p

Well, they custom-made the ATX backplane . . . I'm scanning the article again . . . I believe that the sound header and three caps on the board would have prevented the case from closing fully. So they just popped a good PCI sound card in and put wires on the caps (there's pictures of the caps on HOCP.)

If you look at this pic here from that article, you can see that the sound device would have gotten in the way of the whole mobo fitting.
