Best carpet cleaner?

We have a cat at home and when I was in college the litter box was poorely maintained and cleaned by my parents. As a result our basement became a giant liter box. Now the previously white carpet is yellow and dark and hardly anyone can handle the smell. I got the cat to use the litter box aggain so no I am trying to clean the carpet. I have been trying sevearal regular carpet cleaners like Woolite foam and stuf. And we also have a Hoover carpet steamer which I use with hover cleaner, and some rug doctor cleaners and recently I have tried using Tide with bleach but although it is slowly working the carpet is still quite bad.

So I was wondering what is the best cleaner you have used on extremely dirty carpets. I can use the hoover steamer or shampoo it manualy if needed, as long as I get it clean and can get out the oders. The basement is one big room at least 40 x 30 feet maybee more. I am hoping for something other then profetional steaming and shampooing or replacing the carpet.

Thanks

elkinm, I have a Hoover wet/dry vac w/ a steam cleaner attachment and all I've ever needed to clean high traffic area's was the stuff recommended in the manual. Since you mention the carpet is white, how about trying to spot clean an area w/ bleach and see what the results are like?

Best cleaner in this case is you.

Rip the carpet out and toss it. You'll never totally get rid of the smell.

Tell me again why peolpe have cats?

Thanks, I don't want to replace the carpet as I believe it is very expensive considering the size of the room.

And is Oxy clean as good as it is on TV? and how does clorox oygen action compare to it.

Thanks again

Believe me, you won't get rid of the smell. Your cat will always smell it and even if the litterbox is clean your cat will perceive the the carpet to be the drop zone.
THey have these pet carpet cleaners at pet stores but they are expensive and are meant for spot cleaning. Try renting a powerful carpet cleaning machine. IF that doesn't work, get a new carpet and put diapers on the cat.

I used to have a cat and when we didn't clean the litter on time he would pee at leisure. I know how bad the smell can be. We had to get rid of our area rug after that.

My cat seems to be using the litter box full time now so as long as it is cleaned the carpet should be free from further staining.

What exactly is a Rug muncher, is it a machine like the Rug Doctor or is it some cleaner?

Thanks
