Best card to tie me over until next gen?

I gave my fiance the computer with my unlocked gf6800. So, I'm currently using onboard Intel GMA950 graphics on my computer. At least Morrowind seems to run.

What would be the best pci-e card to buy for short term? I'm mostly waiting for NWN2 and Oblivion to come out, which is sometime next year for both.

x700 pro or 6600gt?

TIA!

if it's between those 2 cards the 6600Gt wins hand down.

Yeah, I agree the GT is better. Just was wondering if it was worth buying something else to tide me over till the 8000 or whatever series is next?

I have a 2005fpw monitor, and a 3.2gig dual core system with 2GB of ram right now. I mainly play Morrowind (if Oblivion wasn't delayed for a while, I'd get a 7800 right now), some NWN, and then Half Life 2.

Thanks!

6600GT is about the best deal in the lower price range...

It does well with Half Life 2 if you don't crank up the res too high, and that should be your most intensive game.

Well, it's 70 more than the 6600GT, and if the most that is being played is HL2, 6600GT gets the job done.

I'm on a 6600GT, and I can play every game acceptably.

An x800 is better than a 6600gt for the same price. But this card
c3d x800gto
will own pretty much any other card from last gen when unlocked and OC'd, so for $180 this is a killer deal.

I don't believe it would beat a x850XTPE or 6800 Ultra, and that's last gen.

But yeah, it's a nice deal. Hell, if it unlocks properly it could last a bit.

If you get a good OC'er like I did, it would beat an xt pe and definitely an ultra. I got ~6800 in 3dmark05 with mine. But even an average OC'er will reach ~520 - 540mhz on the core, so it would be as good or better than an x850xt in most cases.

Well, from my experience, core speed doesn't mean a thing. My 6600GT has a faster core than the 6800GT. That doesn't mean a thing when it comes to performance.

Still... a x800GTO beating the XTPE and Ultra? That sounds a bit farfetched... but I guess it could work. Is it still stable then or do you need an aftermarket cooler?

A 6600gt has half the pixel and vertex pipes, and half the memory bus, so yeah in that case the core clocks dont mean much. But the x800gto uses the r423 core, which is the same as the x800xt. The x850 uses the r480 core, and its basically a r423 with some power saving features and tweaked for higher clocks. So at 540mhz, the gto is almost identical to the x850 xt pe, and if it goes higher it would be faster. My 3dmark score is definitely higher than any stock xt pe or ultra can get.

Edit: And mine was stable at those speeds too with the stock cooler, but I installed a zalman anyway to keep the noise down.

Yeah, I'd seen some good prices on the x800GTO parts. Is no PS3 a big deal for current gen games?

I'd rather have a faster sm2 card for now then a slower sm3 card, so it's not a big deal to me. So far I havent seen any game that makes me wish I had a sm3 capable card.

I tend to agree, but a 6600GS for $209 seems quite reasonable, no?

In the face of the x800GTO, no.

Im not quite sure what to suggest. 6600GT, X800 GTO, X800, 6800GS are all good competitors.

The 6800GS performs similiarly to a 6800GT, often beating it which left me quite astonished. And its only a 12pp card!!.

I reckon the 6800GS, since it OCes like mad. Most reviewers managed to reach around 520ish core and 1100ish memory.

The card itself looks alot more nicer, since it plays all current games fast and gives all those other features that the X800 series dont quite have.

That Connect3D x800gto...how good of a chance of OC does it have? If its not a sure thing I think I'd go 6800GS, but if so it makes it harder to decide. :)
