whats your budget?

New cards are coming soon so that should push the price down on the 5xxx series cards.

I would imagine a Radeon 5770 wouldn't be a terrible match. The CPU might be somewhat slow for that level of card, but not terrible. You could probably even go with a GeForce GTX460, but I doubt it would make much sense to go beyond that.

For what it is worth, I am running a Phenom II @ 3.6GHz on my AM2+ motherboard with DDR2. If your board supports it, a PhII x3 could be a cheap and very worthwhle upgrade.

I will insert the usual, what resolution do you play at? Give more info so we can give you a better idea.

4870 for $100 is very hard to beat for the price and would be a good match for that CPU.

Comparing my CPU to yours in AnandTech Bench, they perform very similar in games. I find that my Radeon 4850 is a pretty good match. I'll echo the resolution request, but otherwise I'd say you're looking at a similar range.

Radeon 4850 or the faster and more efficient Radeon 5770, or stick with Nvidia with the GTS 250 (4850 equivalent) or the more efficient and usually faster GTS 450 (sometimes about the same as the 250, other times decisively faster).

^Radeon 4870 is for $100 is a good deal. It's a powerhog, but provides 5770 performance albeit without DX11. $100 after rebate on Newegg.

I would think something along the lines of an HD 5750 or GTS 450 (at most) would be a good match up for your CPU. I had an X2 6400+ at one time (stock speeds - couldn't OC it any higher) and it couldn't even make full use of an 8800 GTX.

This is a statement I see often. How does someone determine this?

it seems pretty simple to me. someone with the same card but a better cpu gets better performance. basically you can just look at gpu reviews and see what performance you would/should be getting because they all use high end cpus.

Ok for more details:
my monitor goes up to 1920 x 1080
processor is 6000+ @ 3.1ghz ( stock)
4 GB DDR2 800 RAM
MB is Asus M3A78-EMH (AMD 780G)
Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I would prefer to spend less than 130 on the graphics card. I *might * be willing to change out the CPU, but only if the processor was in the $80 range.

You can get a Phenom II X2 555 for $89 or an Athlon II X4 630 for $88.

Well if you were to upgrade the processor I'd suggest the Phenom II X3 740:

And then you can pair whatever video card you want.

Although since you are running 1080p you should be able to see nice gains if you get an HD 5770 or GTX 460. But I wouldn't get anything much faster than these without upgrading the processor. Since your budget for the GPU is $130 the HD 5770 is about the fastest you can get. Other options are the GTS 450 and HD 5750. I suggest getting it regardless if you upgrade the CPU.

if you are going to play at 1920X1080 -- focus on the GPU -- GTX 460 768 or 1GB would be good. That CPU is plenty fast for today's games.

well at 1920 768mb is not enough for some games that would otherwise be perfectly playable. I say go for the 1gb model if getting a gtx460 for 1920x1080. if he only has $130 or so to spend then the 5770 is the best bet for his situation. and no that cpu is not enough for all of today's games.

Can you have 2 x NV cards in an AM2 board?, he could use the 88 as Phyx if he got the 450.....
