Hello,
My MSI Geforce TI4200 died on me. I would like to find the best card that my ASUS P4PE will accept (and make use of)...The limitations are that (per the manual) it will accept AGP 4x w/ 1.5v (only).

I know that there have probably been some great advances in the new motherboards ...But I would like to hang on to my "Old school" board. Any recomendations?
Thx!!

you can run any AGP card even if they say 8x on them. They'll just run at the 4x you're mobo supports. You didn't say a price, but considering your rig sounds old anyways I'd go for something in the 9600xt-9800 pro/xt range by radeon. They have the best bang for the buck in that price range and they'll do decent on games.

It all depends on what you use your comp for. If its not that current and you just surf, do lite gamming, you can get away cheap.

Newegg lists AGP 2X-4X and 4X-8X cards that range from $21 to $750. Any of these will work.

My Intel board is not current and I'm going from a FX5200 to a 6800 Vanilla. My board is rated for 8X.

Any of the 4X rated cards will work, just shop for what YOUR needs are. Use the search function at Newegg.

I'm NOT reccomending you buy there, but I do sometimes.

I really go through "phases" with what I use my computer for. The last game that I played was Doom 3 a year or so ago...But now that I am replacing the Video...Maybe I'll start with one of the new 3d shooters. I have a P4 2.4Mhz that I O/C'd to a 2.65...Not really slow enough to upgrade yet.

... Just so I am clear, am I to understand that I really shouldn't worry about which of the new cards I select since they will all work w/ my 1.5v AGP 4x? I always kind of thought that the 1.5V would really limit my selections..??? Not the case?

Thx for your help!

I maybe wrong but I think I read that 8X has not even reached it's full potential yet and PCI Express is way past what 8X can do.

Just get something better than my old FX5200. The best thing about that card is it has supported the very high resolution/refreash rate
CRT display I use. Any AGP card will work. The prices are coming down on the mid-AGPs because the new standard is PCI Express.

I have the 6800nu in my 4x agp slot and I pull the same scores as any 8x board. Just make sure you're not gonna become cpu limited and buy a card that is complete overkill.

Voltage is a HUGE issue, if you have a 3.0 Volt AGP 4x slot. That means that if you put a 1.5 card into it, the card will fry. Your fine, and any 8x/4x card whould work with your slot. A word to caution to those with older 3.0 Volt AGP slots. Don't buy a 1.5 AGP card.

The old 3 volt are not just old, but very old. I had that on my old K62 board and I think it was up to the 2x boards, but there may be some 4x AGP boards with 3 volt. If you are sure that it's 1.5volt, then you can accept any AGP card that has been released since your TI4200 has been out.

I just replaced my TI4400 with an AGP 8x 6800nu card for like $165 US on Newegg. I'm getting much better benches and it's runnin all the new programs very well (BF2 looks very sweet on it). It overclocks very nicely too. For the price, you can't get much better and it will probably be the last AGP card you'll ever need before you go to a new system with PCI-Ex cards. I'll be doing a big upgrade this fall or early winter to a new full system, but I'm sure this new card would last the average gamer at least a year or more.

Good point, but i was assuming that since he had a Ti4200, he would have had the 1.5v AGP4x slot. The 3.0v was from way back in the 2x/4x days, so i think that he should be fine. And yes, i agree that a 6600GT or a regular 6800 would be a good card for that system.
