Hello,

First I want to say I know that this is similar to another post, but you will see why I think another one was warranted.

I have a brand new system with a 1.4 T Bird, 512 Crucial DDR ram, Epox 8k7a and im running XP. Which is the best vid card I can buy for this system for between $70 - $150?

I made two really bad desicions apparently when I bought soundblaster live! and my Rage Fury Maxx, because obviously they have driver problems, and this is the reason for laying out exactly what kind of setup I have.

I have made my Rage Fury Maxx somewhat useable, but I need to get this out ASAP(its usable only at 800X600 res).

Im not a hard core gamer, I basically play Tribes II every once in a while. Im looking for something that wont give me any problems, and with a few perks that I may actually use.

I think I have the absolute worst luck buying parts, so thats the reason for this post. What card is probably the best bet for me at this point?

Save an extra 40 bucks, and wait for the Geforce 3 Ti 200, (Geforce 3 MX).

The announcement is due anyday now, and its gonna be in stores soon. The price is rumored to be $199.

Wait, you'll be glad you did.

Get anything else, and you'll be kicking ya-self.

at $199, how do I save $40, and as far as the Radeon cards, what is the best of the lot? There seem to be a lot of versions that are similarly priced. Also do the Radeon cards have driver problems(which is how I ended up in this mess to begin with).

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

gf2 pro from newegg. I have set up a similar system for a friend with this card. No complaints, and it's in your reach. Nobody updates their drivers at the rate that Nvidia does, especially ATI.

alnoa, he said you should "save up another $40", not that "you will save another $40."

Actually, you should save up more like $80.

Thanks for clearing that up godspeed, I read it a bit too quick there. I decided to take some of your suggestions and got a geforce 2 from newegg, leadtek was going for $49 with free shipping so I had to act on it. I compared prices on pricewatch and $49 shipped seemed almost fit for a "warm" post on the hot deals forum.

Edit: DOH!!! I didnt get the Pro version. Im gonna have to get back on and change my order I suppose. As you can see im about a step away from being worthless.

Can anyone suggest the "best deal" out of the geforce pro options?

Once again, thanks for all your help.

If you are buying right now and you are looking for problem free under XP? I'd definitely go with nVidia, the Gainward GeForce2 Pro450 from NewEgg is in your price range has very good 2D and when you do decide to game, will whip anything in its price class.

That said the TiGeForce3 "MX" is likely to make an appearance fairly soon, although I am expecting it to be a bit closer to $200 it may well be in the price range you are looking for and likely will be a much better overall choice. Of course, that is speculative and if you need a board right now I don't think you will be let down going with the Gainward GeForce2 Pro450.
