Best card for the money...

I have 300 $ to spend on a video card. Can you give me the two cards best for the money from both ATI and Nvidia as Im still unsure of which I want to buy from. Thanks!

Nvidia: 6800GT

ATI: X800XT

As for which one, depends on if you are a SM3.0 believer or not. If you are, get the 6800GT, if not, get the X800XT.

If you can find a X800XT for 300, buy it, but I can't find one. That and they're all AGP as far as I know. I'd personally go for the X800XL, I have one and it handles mostly everything on high at 12x10.

I got my X850XT on sale for $350, and have seen the X800XL on sale for $250 a number of times, so figured the X800XT could be found on sale for around $300.

That's seems like a long wait. I know Ati is selling a bunch of refurb x800xt's online for a little over $200, with a 3 year warranty. You cant beat that for the money, but it might be a few weeks after ordering before you actually get it. Otherwise, both the 6800gt and the x800xl are good cards for <$300, but IMO there should be new high-midrange cards available for that price soon (maybe a 16-pipe 7800 vanilla) that's as good as a 6800gt or better.

AFAIK, they aren't selling the XT PE's anymore...only the AGP/PCI-E of the X800XL for $179.00 + shipping (also 5%). Check the Hot Deals section.

Does anyone know if there's going to be a big price drop soon or do prices just slowly and gradually come down in price?

Reason I ask is that I too am looking for a good vid card for a new rig and I am debating whether to spend $150 for a 6600GT or $250 for a 6800GT. My gut tells me to go w/ the 6800GT for better value/performance but I'm worried that once I do jump the gun, it'll go down in price by a lot in a short amount of time.

So would buying a used 6800gt for $230ish be a wise investment?

Why not get a 6800 (you could even unlock it and overclock it).

I don't think the prices will change much for a while. Although around the holiday season you might be able to find some awesome deal as competition heats up (not just between ATI and NVIDIA, but stores as well).

Reason I don't get a 6800 vanilla is b/c I can't find one that's got dual dvi and PCI-E. (maybe I haven't looked hard enough).

But I see prices on newegg for 6800 vanillas for like $230+, might as well get a used 6800GT for that price.

So..you're telling him to wait 4-5 months to buy a new card? :S By that time there will be better vid cards and he wil have his eyes on those. For now I say he should get an X800XL/6800GT(if he really wants to pay the extra for the SM3.0).

X800XL/6800GT is where the money is. If you found a good deal on either X850XT or 6800 Ultra for some reason, those aren't bad either.
