I don't know how much is in your bank account, so I will just go with bang for buck. If buying new, I would say 6700XT or 6800XT would be good deals around now. There were new 3090s for under $1000 recently, but it seems they are gone.

If you want something significantly faster than your 2060 with more than 8GB from Nvidia, it will cost you. Seems like the floor is over $700.

As Shmee wrote, AMD 6700-6800 series are the best value at the moment.

so let me switch the conversation a bit...My monitor is 2560 x 1080 (21:9 aspect) or ultrawide at 200 Hz. is there a recommendation on a card for that?

I'd recommend you wait a tiny bit more.
But otherwise, RX 6800XT is my rec too.

As a side-note, Radeon cards play better with CPU overheads/lower-than-4K resolutions, so even more mileage out of your 5800X, ReBAR/SAM seems more consistent on AMD+AMD too.
Besides being much better value than GeForce (some 3000 series still sell over MSRP to this day).

OK Patients is a virtue. Ill check back after the 7900 XT hits the shelves and we can discuss more..LOL

Thanks :)

Its worth noting that 6800XTs are only going to be around while supplies last. Once they sell out, thats it. So if you want a deal on that performance class, now is the time.

The 7900XT has an MSRP for $900 for the AMD version, expect AIB models to cost $100 or so more.

At this point, if I were looking for a new card, I would just wait for RX 7800 non-XT or 4060 Ti. And if I couldn't wait, I would get the RX 6700 10GB for $329.99: https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-11321-02-20G-Radeon-Gaming-Graphics/dp/B0B95LX4JG

Even in raytracing, it's not that behind the more expensive 3060 12GB.

XFX RX 6700 is $319.99: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BCL3L6ZG

MSI 3060 12GB with a free game is $335.99: https://www.newegg.com/msi-geforce-rtx-3060-rtx-3060-aero-itx-12g-oc/p/N82E16814137758

And then I could spend a year or two without feeling the itch to upgrade.

Agreed. There is a possibility of semiconductor price collapse in the near future. Of course I cannot see the future, but the fact that prices are VERY unstable right now, and that asking prices are all over the place is enough for me to delay any new purchase.

Typically you can get Dead Island 2 and The Calisto Protocol w/ a RX 6700, not sure why it's not advertised there. Maybe only some regions (or vendors) idk.
