OK lets see...

-30k is a hard cap. Ideally it would be down around 25k

-I plan on getting it in about 6 months, no more than a year.

-I am not looking for a roadster (even a 2+2 is too small I think)

-I dont need a rocket

-I want a car that will last about 10 years (if I go for the 30k model)

-I am not that interested in Japanese, aside from maybe Acura or Honda (maybe Nissan)

-I like gadgets, so new technologies would be cool

-I pretty much have to have side-impact air

Up around 30k

A Passat. I have the wagon and I love it. Aphex II has one and he thinks pretty much the same. If it matters, Consumer Reports gave it their highest rating. Worth a look.

Yea, I am considering the Passat. It is a sweet car. Doesnt have any real "bad boy" value, but the girls like steady guys anyways 🙂

For 30K, you could get a REALLY nice car. Maybe a Honda Civic or something, and it will only cost maybe $20,000.

If you want long term reliability, it would be hard to go "American".

True, but the GM 3800 V6 is an awesome engine. I wouldn't have a problem getting some flavor of Buick with a supercharged 3800.

From my experience with VWs (6 cars), the cars last a long time, but there are minor problems all along the way. I love the look and feel oftheir cars, but it would be hard for me to part with my money for one.

If it was my money, I'd get the new Altima. Reliable, fairly roomy, looks awesome, and very fast.

You'll consider a Honda, but not a Subaru? Get yourself a Rex. I love the body style of the RS and WRX.

All I hear all day at work is how good The Honda Accord is.
I am in the market for a new car and am looking at the VW Jetta.
BTW my boss has 290k on his old Honda🙂

The v6 altima is soo much cooler than the accord. it should be similar in reliability too....(im not a nissan fanboy!)

I also love the subaru wrx; u can fit 4 but it probably doesnt fit into what ur looking for (its a five seater but 4 comfortably; and it is a "rocket" - so doesnt meet two of ur categories but all else are filled) and its 25k! (nicely equipped with fun stuff)

around 30k is the acura TL. you will NOT be disappointed... this car kicks so much arse. xenon headlamps, sunroof, heated seats, leather interior, etc, all standard. has about 225 horses... it drives really nicely... i can't say enough good stuff about this car. i love it.

I too am looking at the price range of 30k and have come down to mainly two choices: Subaru WRX and the Nissan Altima. The Altima is pretty roomy and has a good ride with plenty of power. The WRX is 4wd so it will have superior handling. Both are good 4-doors. I might throw the Maxima in there if I could get more money in the budget because man those cars are sweeeet. They aren't as fast as Altimas but they are sooo much more roomy and the ride is so smooth that I'd be afraid to drive it for a long time or else I'd fall asleep so easily... The Honda Accord is also a great car, as is the civic. Right now I'm saving my money and driving an 89' Honda Civic Si. The car has over 150k and has zero problems with it. Even with driving fast and racing around I still pull around 25mpg and if I dont race for the whole tank I can pull almost 40 mpg on the thing.

Well... we gotta recommend the Subaru WRX, considering that it is the semi-offical car of ATOT 🙂

The American cars that fit your guidelines are the Ford Taurus, Chevy Malibu, Pontiac Grand Am, Olds Intrigue, and the Dodge Stratus. I wouldn't want to keep any of them for 10 years, though.

A Honda Accord or a Nissan Ultima would probably be your best bets.

Altima, Maxima, maybe a TL. I love the RSX-S and the I definitely dig the WRX, but they will be too small for what you want. You can save a shiznload and get a Honda Accord EX. That's what I would do.

Sounds like you want a REAL car, how about a older (98?) MB c-series. Had a chance to drive my uncles once, solid as a rock.

For new models, VWs TDI line.
