whats the best car alarm system right now
whats the best car alarm system at the best price?
where do you buy your alarms?

the best is Lojack at around $800

something cheaper I'd look at the Viper or something else by Directed

I bought a new car 6 months ago and never put an alarm on it since I think it's a waste of money. the car has a built in anti-theft system and buying another one won't decrease your insurance or make your car less likely to be stolen.

Not "good" but better than nothing. Clifford alarms if installed correctly are very good. Where ever you go or what ever you choose to get, make sure its from a reputable place. Its all about the install for car alarms.

Check out http://forum.sounddomain.com/, the forums here are great.

I have a viper alarm on my car and really like it. I have the motion sensor on so it gives a warning chirp if you are too close to the car without going into the full blown annoying alarm. I don't know if its really helping, but my car has not been broken into yet. I figure if I can't hear my alarm, its not doing any good anyway. Nobody else is going to stop somebody or call the police if my car is getting broken into. I bought my alarm just so I could hear my car at night.

Before I purchased the viper alarm, I had the stock alarm that came on my car. It was rated the best by the insurance company and I got the biggest discount offered. I discovered that the alarm was mostly a theft prevention device (disables the car from starting), and only goes off if a door or the trunk opens (no shock sensor). My car got broken into outside my apartment and the thieves just pulled a dukes of hazard move and came in through the missing window. My stereo was stolen, mud was smeared all over my seats from their shoes, and my car was rained in all night from the missing window. Not an experience I wish to relive.

My brother has (had) a Clifford alarm installed by a pro about 5-6 years ago or so. For the past year or so, he's been having fuel injection issues. The mechanics and the guy who installed his alarm said that the brains of his alarm unit were starting to die or malfunction. Apparently, the alarm prevents the gas from entering the engine. Sorry for the terms, I'm not really car-savvy. 🙂 Anyways, he had to pay the guy $50 to get the whole thing uninstalled from his car and has not had anymore issues.

I personally went with an AstroStart 5204 alarm/autostart system. It was cheap from my dealer and I wanted something to protect my stereo and car and to give me that reassuring feeling that everything is OK when I leave my car parked. I have about $2000 put into my stereo and would be very upset should anything happen. Anyways, I know this alarm isn't top of the line, but it works. There's no shock sensor, but if you bang on the windows, the alarm goes off. Also, it has all the other obvious things like door sensors, trunk, blinking light, and some other ones that I don't remember off the top of my head. A buddy of mine knows a guy who use to steal car stereos. He said if he ever saw a light in the car that would flash or light up at all, he wouldn't touch the car.

lastig21, did your stock alarm come with a blinking light? I'm just curious as to how ballsy your crooks were.

Stock alarm did not have a blinking light.

My viper alarm has a bright blue flashing led so as not to be confused with a factory alarm. Supposedly it makes thieves look at the next car in the parking lot.

clifford alarms hands down

prepare to pay an arm and a leg (i paid 950 installed :Q)

that being said, install is more important than alarm

a 500 dollar alarm with a 400 dollar install is better than an 800 dollar alarm with a 100 install

Exactly. I think there are even lights you can buy that blink when the car is off. It won't protect your car much, but it's a very good theft deterrent.
