Best car alarm for the best price

i was thinking of a viper since they are 109 installed and the generic ones are like 89 and they got them kill switches and stuff LMK i got a 95 civic ex

And if some kid at Best Buy or Circuit City installed it, it might not be so good. It seems that installation and setup are even more important than the actual brand and model.

Agreed. Take it to a real shop. I paid $150 for my Ungo and another $100 for the install. Believe me you're much better off that way. The alarm itself doesn't do anything, its the starter kill that makes the alarm worth the money. If the brain is just shoved up under the dash then its pretty simple for the theif to bypass it.

I have a 2000 Eclipse. Supposedly there's a chip in my key without which the car will not start. How safe/secure are those things?

Why not call your local car alarm shop and ask them?

Anything made by clifford, DEI, viper, alpine are pretty good alarms. Most alarms are the same, your just paying for extra features like shock sensors, glass break sensors, motions sensors, backup batteries etc.

Its not a "kill switch" in the purest form. Basically there's a circuit that disables the ignition so you can't "hotwire" the ignition switch to start the car. When the alaram is tripped the starter circuit is "killed" until the alarm is turned off with the remote.

A kill switch can be easily installed. It serves the same purpose except you have to manually use the switch. The key here is wiring, so nobody can tell you have one, and location of the switch so it is not easily found yet not so far out of the way that it is a hassle.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that most alarms have this feature standard.

Very. My dad bought a PT Cruiser in Dec. If he uses the normal, non-chipped duplicate key, he can start the car for exactly 4 seconds, and then the engine dies. Very nice feature. My brother's Trans Am back in 1988 had it too.

Why not just give me the $100? You'll get the same result. Don't get it done at BB/CC or anyplace like that. Find a local mom and pop shop and ask to look at other installs. Ask about wiring, all that kind of stuff. If you spend the money now your alarm will actually do something more then delay the theif a minute or two.
