HDR has worked for me on AOSP ROMs, but you need to compare image quality as the drivers are probably different. Also what about burst mode? The GS4 and later can do 30 fps burst mode shooting.

I'm not sure about HDR, I have only used it once I think. I have actually never used burst mode. I've never been too impressed with any phone camera to this point, so I pretty much just use it as a tool for work related tasks or quick snaps that I most likely don't plan on keeping. I will see what is possible once I get SlimKat installed again. In any case, the trade off for me is worth it to not have a phone that skips, stutters, and sometimes just falls down with the bloated TW base.

I've never tried the Android version of Camera+, but it's it's half as good as the iOS one it would be a must buy app. It's the best camera app I've used on iOS.

I agree with you. My thing is that in 2015 I don't want to buy a phone that requires me to hack it (and therefore lose some of the paid-for functionality) to get that smooth experience. In 2011 Samsung had the clear best devices so that was the only way, but today there are other phones that works great out of the box or close to it.

Honestly, I suspect the Lollipop phones will not really require custom ROMs to be smooth. The OS itself has been improved enough that combined with even mid-ranged hardware, it should be a good experience.

Of course, Samsung could easily prove me wrong with their next Touchwiz...

OK, I'm listening. If you were looking for a new phone with a good experience out of the box what would you be looking at? I have been thinking about using my upgrade and have been looking at the G3 or Droid Turbo but can't quite pull the trigger.

Honestly Dave I got a new phone in October. Back then after reading reviews I ran to the HTC M8 Google Play Edition.
