My mom is going to a wedding in New Zealand and visiting family in some other countries for a couple of weeks. For an early Christmas present, I decided to buy here a nice digital camera for under 175, I can go up to 200 but under 175 would be nice. I have done a little research and come up with a few examples but here are the basics of what I am looking for.

- AA batteries that can be rechargeable, since she is traveling to a foreign country, I would like the option for her to buy batteries just in case something happens to ones she will be bringing and because she will forget to charge it

-Easy To Use/ Nothing To Advanced since my Mom will be using it (knows how to turn on a computer and check email that is it), but also need to have a decent optical zoom and be able to take good shots that can later be developed when she gets back.

-SD/XD expandable memory, it needs to have some type of easy to remove memory so she can change cards when it gets full since she will not have access to a computer. I don't think this should matter but I need the camera to be able to support at least a 1GB card or bigger

-Reliability, it might take some abuse but at least a 1 year warranty will be nice.

Basically I am looking for an daily camera that meets these requirements , mainly the easy to use and AA battery and at a good price. I would prefer to stick to Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony, but other brands are welcomed.

Some cameras I am looking at:
Canon PowerShot A570 IS ~160
Nikon Coolpix L15 ~160

Thank you for any suggestions and if you have any questions just ask.

Thanks,
Shawn

I would take Canon A570 IS for my mom cuz I am not sure how strong/firm her hands when hold the camera.

i was going to say the canon a560 because its absolutely fantastic, but the 570 is surely better if you can afford it.

I'll play the Devil's Advocate here and say Fuji F40fd. Or the F31, if you can still find it. The one criteria they don't meet is running on AA's, but generic replacements aren't terribly expensive, and they work just as well. I've used generics in my Rebel XT for 2 years.

On the plus side, the F31 and F40 both use Fuji's SuperCCD sensors - physically larger than the sensor in most point-and-shoots, so it should perform a little better in low-light conditions: indoors, cloudy days, etc. The F40 is a little over the $175 mark, but not by much.

Thanks Rottie and zig3695 for the comments.

NTB, the Fuji looks like a nice camera, but I would prefer buying my mom a camera that has AA, just in case she loses the Li-ion batteries or charger. But if I ever need a general use camera, I would definitely consider that one.

Alfa147x, I apologize for making another one of these threads, I did look at the others and that is where I saw the cannon power shot, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't over looking something and its been awhile since I posted something. :)

Anyways it looks like I might just go with the Canon, unless anyone as any other recommendations that I overlooked.
