Hey guys, have had slow connectivity the past 3 weeks or so and had a tech over and he claims it's my old Toshiba PCX 1100 modem so we shall see...

What's the best modem to buy right now? Surfboard SB5120? I'm just trying to keep things as cheep as possible.

Also, isn't there going to be a shift to DOCSIS 3.0 soon?

Have Comcast bring a modem.
If your connection improves, either rent or buy the model that's tested.

Ive gone through 6 Surfboards, I wouldnt recommend them. The D-Link cable modem seems decent, im only on my second one of those.

The Surfboard has upgradeable firmware which is a plus IMO.

Some tweaks out there for it that produce better results for some.

Also, why not just rent one?

Thats what I do with them and have never had an issue and if I were to have one I could get them to replace it if need be.

I had the same Toshiba. I replaced it with a Motorola Surfboard and things got a LOT better. Cable companies are upgrading their infrastructures to DOCSIS 2 and planning for 3, so support of version 1 is starting to suck (I am on Charter).
By the way....do your homework on which surfboard to get....one of the models is problematic. I got a SB-5101 and am happy with it.

Edit: Buying is the way to go if you plan on being stuck on cable based internet access for years.

Not Rent means that if you forgo taking the Modem the ISP reduces the price. Many of them do not care whether you take the modem, the prices stays the same. So in such a case it becomes a mute question, and it better to take their Modem whatever it is.

I tried many Modems in the last few years. It can be that an individual device is no doing well. However with normal operating devices I did not find any differences in performance between these simple Bridges (AKA Modems).

I have a Motorola Surfboard modem and I am getting 15 Mbps download rate! Great reliable cable modem, if you ask me.

Here in Florida they have started giving out Scientific Atlanta Cable modems, they are a Division of Cisco, I Have one, Used to have a Toshiba, When RoadRunner (Bright House Networks) took the speed up from 5mbs to 7mbs my Toshiba modem just didn't like it, they gave me one of the new Scientific Atlanta modem and now i get over 8.6mbs and have a 100% uptime.

The surfboard 5120 is an older model then the 5101.

Check with comcast and see what modems they support.

I have the 5101 and am satisfied with it but I upgraded from a 3100.
