Best Cable Hardware Firewall/Router/VPN:Pls Rply

I'm looking to buy a "Residential Gateway".That is one term I have seen for a hardware firewall/managed switched router/VPN. I have cable internet, and would like 8 ports. It is my understanding that a managed ,switched router allocates bandwith to only those 'puters on the LAN that request it.

I can find precious little information on these LAN/distribution/security/remotedevices.

I'm hoping to get some brand/model specific advice on this purchase.

Anybody ever load up an older PC with NIC's and some software to achieve this?

Don't know about the bandwidth allocation, but I have tried many SOHO RG/VPN/Switches, and so far my favorite is the Linksys BEFSR81 - EtherFast 8-Port Cable/DSL Router. Check it out!
