Looks like Best Buy decided to offer something more powerful than the usual Compaq with a 16-MB shared video memory and a 1.4 Ghz CPU! How nice of them:

Alienware Systems at BestBuy.com

Nice PCs, except they seem to have P4 - exclusively!

<< And Alienware computers are insanely overpriced. >>

Not as bad as NW Falcon or Voodoo.

JoeyJoeJoeJoe, compared to what a penny pinching tweaker could build there overpriced but for a prebuilt system from a respected company with good parts and a warranty their not that expensive.

<< i could build you like 4 pcs for the price on one alireware >>

That may be so but will you support them the same way Alienware does? Will you wake up at 3 am to tell someone that you don't support games just systems? Will you provide binders and cds that the customer does not even use or read before calling you? I think not... and before you think I have one I bulit my own but I have bulit systems for other and if I knew then what I know now I would have never done it or charged more for what I did do

Apparently, Best Buy will also be featuring other vendors in the future - from what I've read. I wouldn't think of this as Best Buy is selling Alienware systems, but rather, BB is "featuring" Alienware systems. This is no different than Borders books or Target being featured at Amazon.

Alienware is discounting by selling in bulk to bestbuy ya tards!, unless you go in and say, "high, I'd like a custom built pc" your not going to get to overcharged at all if you compare what you get with a compaq or HP.

After seeing what a buddy of mine went through with AlienWare I wouldn't give them a dime.

We probably won't have sales on the alienwares because they are only carried on the website. I am glad we sell some computer that aren't crap now though. Makes my job a little easier. I've only felt ok selling Micron for a while now. We only sell i845-based P4 now, so there is no point going P4 IMO.:)

It's a long story...but the Cliff's Notes version is that he purchased
a system from them almost a year ago and it has never worked right. He's had to swap in video cards, re-install OS, and the latest was swapping out the motherboard. He has been run around for a year. The last I heard he had it running fairly stable and felt a fresh Windows install would clear up the remaining problems.

His system, which hasn't been stable for the past year is now worth about half what he paid for it and he has yet to have full use of it. He's had
to do hundreds of dollars worth of tech work himself (hardware swaps and software installs) and often he would get sent in different directions by different tech support staff members.

There is much more to this but as it's been over a year since this all started I've forgotten alot of the details. I know at one point he was actually considering filing a small claims suite against them to get back the price of the machine.

I know he will NEVER buy or recommend Alienware to anyone. This is only one story but if you take a trip to resellers.com you will find more. I know that isn't always the best indicator since you don't hear from all the people that had good experiences, but it still says something about the company.

You're better off having one of the established traders/builders on these forums build one for you or find a local shop that is reputable. It will likely be ALOT cheaper and a local shop is much easier to hold accountable.
