Best Buy Returns

Bought a sweet Blu-Ray player in October, but it never seemed to work correctly, and I rarely watch TV. I thought the problem was Comcast initially. Later I thought it was the wiring, and I scheduled the installer to come back out and check the wiring. Anyway, I finally figured out the problem was with the Blu-ray player. I like the features, I just want one that works. But wait, now it is beyond the return time for Best Buy. If they wont exchange it I will be pissed. What if I buy a new one of the exact same kind, and then return it the next day with the broken player inside. Is there a better idea? Surely this has happened to other folk.

It is immoral but you wouldn't be unlike 10-15% of people there when I worked there more than a decade ago. They will charge you a 15% restock fee now though.

Might be illegal, but I am not sure it is immoral.

No, I am quite sure it is immoral. Buying something to return the wrong item in the box when you should be calling the manufacturer?

I paid for the player. They gave me a broken one. I don't mind dealing with Sony if that works. I just don't want to pay for a broken player and have to spend more money to buy one that works.

Well yes, they gave you 30 days to figure that out also. If you are nice they might help you. If not, call Sony. Buying one to return the other one in the box is just shady.

I wouldn't say its immoral....too open to interpretation when morals are involved. I would simply call it unethical.

Sony is going to handle it. I felt like there was something shady about returning the broken one in a new box, but I did not know how else to get a working play, as I paid for. Since Sony helped, everything is ok. Had Sony refused to help, I think I would have stuck it to BestBuy since they have a better relationship with Sony and I am sure they can have it returned.

Problem exists between chair and keyboard.

In other words it isn't best buy's problem, not anymore. If it didn't work and you had 30 days you should have done something about it. If I buy something I know within 10 minutes if it works or not. Before I get it tucked away I plug it in and verify it works.

I agree basically. Here, it was very difficult to tell where the problem existed - TV, Comcast, wiring, receiver, set-up. It is not as if I bought something and mis-handled it, and then returned it. Also, it worked initially. I think the HDMI jack is loose in the back.

Glad Sony is taking care of it. However wouldn't they have noticed the receipt serial number vs box serial number vs actual serial number on the player itself something not matching up? Haven't brought a large ticket item from Best Buy in a while so not sure how and what is listed. Thats all you need is police coming in and saying excuse me sir we need to have a word.

Agreed. And everything will be ok here. It would just suck if a defect on their end, did not get resolved because of a warranty technicality.

The problem exists in part because the player was initially defective, but seemed to work correctly at first. Over time the port loosened, and then the problem was obvious.

Not to get too far of the mark but years ago I brought a Westinghouse lcd 32 inch from Best Buy. I asked the guy if i brought a warranty it would cover anything that would possibly happen He said yes. 4 months later i get 2 small black vertical lines on the tv.(watching 4x3 content. Didnt now about it back then. Called it in for service and the guy said it wasn't covered. Lost of back and fourth calls to Best Buy and they would fix it. I wrote a very nasty letter to Westinghouse.(no profanity) I told them about their tv and i would never buy another product from them. They then sent me an email with some sort of authorization code to take the tv back to Best Buy. Thats just what did.

Wonder how many people that are claiming this is unethical/immoral think it is okay to pirate mp3/movies (which seems to be many of the posters on this forum)....

If you don't want any problems returning anything to Best Buy - don't buy anything from that store. There are many sources to buy electronics from.

Best Buy are notorious about their return policies.

Why would a blu-ray player issue be related to comcast at all?

Well, that is why it takes more than 30 days to figure everything out. If you are watching Netflix, and the pictures goes bad, which component is it? TV? Wiring? receiver? All of them will blame your internet connection first.

Simple test, does your pc also get bad quality? If so...your ISP or the internet in general is to blame.

Lately every video service has been bad for me and I get huge lag spikes. There are a lot of bad routers between me and most sites. Two of them I traced to Comcast's internal network in south Florida. I have to wait for them to fix it.

I bought an open-box Pioneer VSX-"823-K" that was really a VSX-522 that somebody went through a lot of trouble to conceal. They even put a sticker over the silkscreen printing on the back saying it was an 823-k, and put a windows COA sticker (the one that leaves a nasty residue when you try to remove it) over the silkscreen on the front over the 522 model number.

Don't be that A-hole. If I could find the guy that did that, I would punch him in the balls and take a dump in his car's air filter.

Most people will swap the sticker if it's possible, however many places don't even bother to look or even open the box.

Always ask to open the openbox items before you leave. Even though they had a process (at least when I was there 15 years ago) you wouldn't believe the number of computers that came back missing cpus, ram, HDDs etc. My favorite was the brand new top of the line Sony Vaio that when powered on booted up with a huge Compaq logo. Someone had swapped the guts. Card board "TV's with bricks." Factory GM car stereos in boxes etc. Basically even thought the front desk was supposed to have service sign off on things they typically didn't.
