I was in Best Buy last night exchanging a gift I got for Christmas. While I was in line I was listening to the woman in front of me returning her DVD player because it was broken. After listening some more I learned that it was broken because it only shows half the picture and doesn't show all of the movie!!! The girl at the counter tried to explain to her that the movies were widescreen and that it was working perfect. The woman still didn't believe her and even threatened to SUE!! Best Buy if they didn't give her one that worked.

OMG!! I really think they shouldn't let some people out of the house

It's sad but true. Dumbass people like this is what is forcing some studios to start releasing Pan&Scan ("formatted to fit your TV") movies instead of the original theatrical aspect ratio.
Young people pick up on the concept of widescreen (and why you must have black bars to play a 16:9 movie on a 4:3 TV) pretty easily, but adults are stubborn and afraid of change. At least I hope that's the case...because I don't know how anyone could not comprehend this.

what makes me wonder is how people like this survived long enough and ended up with enough money to even make buying a dvd player possible.

So true....the money was probably earned at a non-technological job. It seems silly that she could be quite so dense, though. I guess you can never underestimate the stupidity of the American consumer. Without it, Best Buy would never survive in the first place.

This is one negative side-effect of the availability of cheap DVD players. Now that anybody can afford one, the bar has been sufficiently lowered and something that makes DVDs great (original theatrical aspect ratios) is now threatened. If you don't like the "bars", buy a freakin' VHS tape. :|

I agree totally. I would much rather watch the film in OAR.

Go sign this Petition

This petition is meant to show Blockbuster Video that the DVD community does want rent and/or purchase widescreen DVDs. The film studios actually listen to Blockbuster, and if they see that Blockbuster is only stocking Full Frame DVDs, it could ruin the entire DVD format for those who enjoy true film.

Good Lord, some people are dense.

What the hell does she think "widescreen" means?
