Best Buy Power Supplies.

They are cheap PSUs made with the lowest cost parts available. They are there to get the sucks that don't know how to do there own research and want to build a computer. The kind of people who base there parts choices on the advise of people in the store that claim to know something about computers but barley know how to turn one on them selfs.

To be fair, there are worse. Deer, Powmax.... It doesn't help that Best Buy inflated the wattage claims. Instead of being mediocre 300W and 650W PSU's, they're horrible 400W and 700W PSU's.

Right. Looks these same units up in Europe under the Huntkey brand and you can easily find them for less than HALF of what Best Buy is asking for the product.

i would just stick with thermaltake, antec, corsair, ... so you know you are getting 'true' voltages at the listed wattage constantly.

Are you talking about what Best Buy sells, or in general? If you do your research there are certainly PSUs from other manufacturers out there that are as good as or superior to anything from those three companies. Thermaltake and Antec have made some stinkers in the past and some of the stuff that Thermaltake sells now, isn't all that great.

I personally will not buy a power supply at Best Buy stores.
They are overpriced on almost everything and on some
products, the quality just may not be there. If I was looking
for a new power supply I would consider PC Power & Cooiling
or Antec as the first choices. Only things I would consider at
Best Buy, might be some CD or blank media or maybe a case
as you can see the quality of the display model & decide if
it's good for you.

i am sure there are better options out there . i was just stating a few brands at least where the wattage they give is generally a true value of the constant power the psu can supply. many cheaper brands advertise the maximum wattage only and with their cheaper parts they cannot operate steadily at this value.

That's nasty, and just reinforces my additude toward PSUs. Even for a low end supply, buy only from the best brands who have a good warranty and stick behind it unwaiveringly.

Ever since I bought this (now old) PCP&C silencer 360w about three/four years ago direct from them for $54 shipped, I will never buy another brand for my more expensive PCs.

I will make exception to my rule once in a while and get certain POWER MAN / FSP brand for my secondary and older boxes, (the POWER MAN supplies that FSP makes).

Think about the damage that PSU did to the test equipment. What if that was your PC? How much money would you just have lost?

Hmm, I wouldn't say stick behind a specific brand unwaiveringly. Stick behind ALL good brands. The more good brands we have, the better. I'd happily buy anything from a number of psu brands, and specific product lines from other brands. There's a number of good truly rated product out there. The best way to get good deals it to pick from everything that meets your goals. Same philosophy with every piece of hardware out there.

I wouldn't mention FSP/SPI in the same performance range as the Seasonic and CWT built Corairs.

I would say Silverstone is another company where you can pretty much be sure that what they advetise is what you get and that you can be fairly certain you are buying a quality product from them.

Personally, if I am going out and spending a fair amount of money on an important component like a PSU, then I am going to do some research and not narrow my search to 1 or 2 companies.

That goes for everything from RAM modules to automobiles.

How is it possible you quoted me and yet mistquoted me? I said:

Well then, that would include Best Buy since they take pretty much anything back for any reason. 😉

Let's move on....

So even after the review here which showed how crap they were you would call the supplies best buy sells as some of the best in the industry? I'm shocked.

Of course not. Don't mince my words. I'm sure you know what part of your post I was responding to.

I was only talking about the "good warranty and stick behind it" part of your post. The part of your post that tomoyo misunderstood.

Best Buy takes anything back for any reason... or no reason... and with no restocking fee. So one could say they certainly stand behind their warranty. Furthermore, they don't keep track of the serial numbers on Dynex and Rocketfish so even if the unit is two years old and you lost the receipt you could still exchange it at Best Buy.

But I was ONLY, facetiously, talking about the warranty part of your post.
