ATLANTA – Best Buy has alerted some customers that it will not be able to fill their online orders, just days before Christmas.

The largest U.S. specialty electronics retailer said late Wednesday that overwhelming demand for some products from Bestbuy.com has led to a problem redeeming online orders made in November and December.

The Minneapolis company declined Thursday to specify how many orders are affected or which products are out of stock.

The shortages are a black eye for Best Buy (BBY), which has beefed up its online campaign to fight off intense competition from online retailers and discount stores. And the holiday season is crucial for retailers like Best Buy because it can make up to 40% of annual sales.

Some glitches should not be a surprise with such a massive surge in online shopping this year, analysts said, but there is a risk of a backlash.

"It is a hiccup for the company," said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy. "They were kind of behind the curve building out their online channel. They've done a good job investing in it, but if you make a lot of rapid changes, inevitably there are going to be growing pains."

The canceled orders probably won't make a big difference for Best Buy's holiday sales this year, but it may lead to customers looking elsewhere in the future, he said.

"The risk is any consumers affected by canceled orders will be willing to explore other alternatives for online shopping in years to come," Hottovy said.

Online sales are up 15% to $32 billion so far this holiday season, while total sales are up just 2.5%.

Even though online sales are a huge boon for retailer, the shift has already created some problems. Discount retailer Target's site crashed in September because of overwhelming demand for Missoni for Target, a limited designer line of clothing, home goods and accessories.

Best Buy benefitted when its now-defunct rival Circuit City went out of business more than a year ago, but its suffering as Americans hold off on big ticket items and search for deals online and at discounters.

In order to compete, Best Buy has expanded its online offerings, cut back on square footage in the U.S. by closing stores and sought to expand internationally. In its most recent third quarter ending Nov. 26, Best Buy said its net income fell 29% as it cut prices in popular categories such as tablets and TVs to drive sales and traffic during the holiday season.

wow that's pretty crappy of them. Those that don't get their gifts in time might never shop there again.

Yep, they sent me a cancellation. At first when I ordered, I got an email saying it was back ordered. Then later I get an email saying its canceled. No option to wait or anything, just canceled. Kind of crappy.

On the same Bestbuy online sucks vein, the girlfriend had some stuff shipped to the house from BestBuy for Christmas. They were nice enough to write on the side of the boxes what was in them, ruining her surprise to me.

BB tried pulling this shit with me. i ordered two laptops on 11/27 that were "in stock". shortly after my order i received an email stating that the items were back ordered with no ETA. i called two weeks later trying to get some answers and was told that if the order cannot be filled it will be cancelled.

"what does that mean for me?", i asked.

"you wouldn't have an order at this point and you would have to try and reorder a replacement if you want a computer."

so i hold out thinking that it could take 10 business days for HP to process the order, build the computer and ship it. i then received an email that my order was cancelled from BB, but they had found a replacement.

i follow the directions to call the 800 number and place my order. what do you know. this item isn't in stock either. i could order it but it couldn't be shipped to a residence. so i buy the two laptops and have them sent to two different stores.

luckily the items were shipped on time. however, they didn't update the order correctly and didn't put the names of the people that the gifts were for on the order. they couldn't pick them up. i'm in washington and the computers were in IN and KY waiting for me. i called customer service and said this was unacceptable. they said they couldn't help me as their system doesn't allow them to update the order after it has been completed. their option was to cancel my order again and start the whole process over. FUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

i called the stores and after being told that i would have to cancel and complete my order again some kind soul took pity on me and allowed my family to pick up their computer. not going to say who or what store since no good deed goes unpunished and s/he clearly broke the rules.

I just ordered the same two games at Best Buy. What's funny is I bought the exact 2 games from Amazon earlier this week because I needed some games to give with the 3DS I bought as Christmas present for my daughter. I paid $17 each on Amazon and thought I was getting a deal since the games retail price was $40. $5 with free shipping is amazing. Since the games from Best Buy will arrive after Christmas, I'm just going to swap and return the Best Buy games to Amazon when I receive it.

Fixed a typo. "the" = "then" ;)

They were $10 at Best Buy a month ago and I was kicking myself for missing them then.

November? Yeah, if you ordered in November and haven't got it yet, I'd think it was time to look elsewhere weeks ago.

BB hooked me up. Cyber Monday, they had 8g Acer 10.1" tablets for $229. Ordered 2 for my kids. One went to backorder, one made it in.

Last week, BB sent an email saying they wouldn't get any more......and offered me either the 16g or 32g for the same price. The tablets are identical other than the memory, and they have a memory card slot and USB.

Needless to say, the 32g arrived a couple of days later. Santa will truly be the man this year.

They boned me. Ordered a Gateway laptop for my son on Nov 28th for pickup in the store. Also ordered Skullcandy headphones for him. Got an email that said the headphones were in on Dec 6th, and that the laptop is "delayed" (Not backordered). Picked up the headphones on the 8th. Laptop still delayed. Waited a week. Called the 800 number, and they said it is In transit from the warehouse to the store. OK, I'll wait.
It is now the 17th and I get an email that says it is "In transit". The 20th I get an email saying it is backordered and now cancelled. I'm an idiot for waiting so long.....I throw a fit, and they say, "Oh well". Go into the local store with all my emails and paperwork, and the store manager does hook me up. Got a Lenovo i3 15.6" for $329. Still mad about the original order though. But they did make good....

You made out good IMO. lenovo > Gateway by leaps and bounds.
