Best Buy no lemon policy

Has anyone ever taken advantage of Best Buy's no lemon policy? If you fork out the extra $220 for the "performance" service plan there's a section in the contract that says if you have 3 service repairs/replacements and something breaks again and you need a 4th, they'll completely replace your laptop "with a product of comparable performance" or issue a voucher for the original purchase price.

I bought a laptop from them a year and a half ago and I'm completely dissatisfied with it. The big thing that got me was I had my battery break while I was overseas (and they specifically talked me into buying the performance plan because they said I would get better service overseas!) and they jacked me around and said the only thing I could do was send my whole system back to the US and it would take a month to fix and get it back to me. Heh, yeah right. So basically I was forced to plug my laptop in everytime I used it, which was thoroughly annoying. So when I got back to the US I went into their store and they're like "uh, well... I don't know why that happened but usually we just send you a new battery in the mail." So I did that and was happy again. However, then I had my first mouse button break, though not terribly bad as I always just tap on the touchpad to use the first click, but always annoying when other people go to use my laptop and can't figure out why my mouse isn't working. My hard drive started making these horrible grinding noises and I'm just waiting for the day when it will fail. And also, my floppy drive broke. So, count em up, 4 problems that need repair. I was really pissed off and went in to Best Buy and bitched at the manager for selling me a shitty laptop with a shitty service plan that didn't help me at all overseas and also for jacking me around. I told him all the problems I was having and asked if I could just get a replacement or a voucher and he said "no, because they have to be 4 separate repairs."

So, I already have 1 repair with the battery and figure I can just send in the laptop (2 weeks at a time for repairs, yikes...) 2 more times for the floppy and the mouse. Then I can walk in on the 4th time, say my hard drive's broken and demand a new laptop.

Thing is, they could very well just give me some shitty refub which makes my plan worthless. However, my laptop was originally a custom build, so they didn't make too many of them, and it'll be about 2 years old by the time I try the no lemon policy, so I'm wondering how good my chances are of them just giving me a voucher for my original price. For what I paid when I bought it I could get something significantly better now, and for free! The thing that worries me is where it says "with a product of comparable performance." They could just give me any old thing with the same stats, but I'm wondering if they'll actually do this or not. I remember reading in the forums one guy who went in with a broken laptop and the manager just gave him store credit because they didn't make that laptop anymore. Anybody have any experience with this? How were you treated? Get a voucher or a refurb? Think there's any chance I could just get them to just give me a new one now instead of having to send it in separate times? Thanks!

They won't give you a refurb.

It varies store to store, but I've had nothing but good luck at the Best Buy I shop at. I've had 2 PSP exchanges on car audio decks, each time netting me a better unit for no extra money. When my amp went they repaired it and had it back to me within 2 weeks, and I didn't pay anything for removal or re-installation. When my Grandpa's scanner died, I brought it in and they gave me the amount I paid on it (2 years ago) towards a new unit.

From what I've heard, when laptops fall under the No lemon policy, they have two options - Give you the amount you paid towards a new unit, or give you the cheapest computer that meets, or if its the case, exceeds the specs on your old laptop.

It's at the store's discretion which they go. Typically, if you're civil, they'll go the former route. Then again, YMMV depending on how good of a Best Buy you shop at.

Regardless, you'll never get a refurb unit, especially on a notebook. They just don't stock them.

only experience I"ve had was with an old Pioneer CD head unit. it kept dying and on th e3rd time, they just said that it was going to cost more to fix than it was worth and to come in and pick out a new unit. the only hassle was that I had bought it open box, and they only wanted to give me credit for 150, and I had paid 350. So I had to find my receipt (3 years ago? good luck) but I did find it and they gave me the 350 credit.

I just strikes me that most people working at best buy are morons tho. No two people can give you the same answer on anything.

Oh yeah, one more thing - If the price of the repair exceeds the cost of replacement, they'll skip the repairs and go straight to replacement.

For something like the LCD screen, you're looking at a $1000 part (through the manufacturer), plus 2 hours of labor at $60 an hour. It's financially more sound for them to give you a $1000 laptop than bother repairing it.
