Best Buy Job Perks?

Hello,

I am considering applying for a job at Best Buy as a supplement to my full time job, but am wondering what the employee discount is. I really want a digital SLR camera like the Canon Digital Rebel and it'd be nice to work somewhere that I could get an employee discount on one.

If anybody is familiar with Best Buy's employee discount program, would you mind letting me know a little bit about it?

Thanks in advance.

As a former BB employee let me just pitch in my two cents:
Don't waste your time. BB is every bit as bad as all the horror stories you've heard, and then some. The company gives exactly two sh*ts about its employees, and that's a fact. Don't believe me? Check out bestbuysux.org for more details :)

Depends on the product really. Computers have almost no markup where as video equipment is generally pretty high. No idea on the cameras though.

Im a 7 year veteran of BBY,
That said I would look elsewhere. The best thing Ive done in a long time was quit. No more stock options for the little folks, if you report dis-honest behaviour by other management (read habitual lie's to customers, false paperwork, well you get the picture) you will be harrased.
For those of you who have worked at BBY, I was a eight time top-gun. I had consistant top-in-region/company performance. I was treated like dirt for years, and when I got fed up with the lies and went to corp over it, guess what? They dont give a crap at all. Big surprise

I dont miss it in the least.

So there are the perks, enjoy

Thanks for the quick responses everybody. After reading it all, I might be better off looking elsewhere. Anybody ever work at Kit's Cameras or Tall's Cameras? :) How about Good Guys or Circuit City? :)

Thanks again for all this useful information!

I am another Best Buy alum and if you are looking to work there for a few hours each week, mostly for the discount and a small supplement on your income, I say do it! Depends on where you are going to work though. How many hours per week are you looking for? What times of the day? Is there a certain amount of money you are looking to make per month, or is it just for discount?

I would have to say the biggest perk is that you are not working at Radio Shack.

What department were you?

I was In LP, Merch, Media, Appliances, Video, PCHO, Tech. Supervisor of most all (cept LP) at one time or another and a assistant for a couple years. I started in 96 and it was a good company then, but in the last 3 years or so it has gone downhill rather quickly, the stuff that management pulls is downright wrong. Im very glad to not be a part of it anymore. You might have been in a good store as they do exist, but its quickly becoming more and more un-common.

CC was cost on all items. it was great on that big screen TV i got my parents. :D

but its the same as best buy - the push to sell the service plans. even in customer service! all i was supposed to do was process returns, put items into service, and ring you up. i even had a monthly quota i was supposed to meet. sigh. i would love to go back to work there part time but alas... the selling of service plans drives me insane...

When I was in high school I worked store 103 (district 32?)

If I remember correctly you had to work 30 days before getting employee discount?

I work at a circuit city, and the discount is decent. Job's not bad. Fairly fun at times... they push you to sell Cityadvantage but other then that its pretty easy going. Discount is basically what they get it at, so wholesale price. Not sure you would find much cheaper anywhere else?

tdawg,

It really depends on what you are looking for, and where you live.

I do/have not work for BB. But, I do live with two roommates that do.

In my area (Albany area New York) it seems to be the second best paying job around. GE happens to be the first.

At the same time, it seems to be one of the worst places to work for.

If all you want is suppliment + discount, I would say apply to several of those companies.
