So I was called last night and have an interview tomorrow at BB. She asked what position and I said no real preference unless they have a Geek Squad position so I think she wrote that down...I don't have any certifications though.

Is there anything I should know? She said bring a resume if you like, but it isn't required, and since I have no work experience, I don't think it'd make a difference. I have a black polo shirt and some khaki pants, and the only "nice" shoes I have are these gross things: ...will that work, or should I just wear the shirt and not worry about pants (beige cargo shorts probably)?

Just a bit nervous since I really need a job and this is my first interview (for a paying job position).

You definitely want to wear the polo shirt and pants. BBY interviews are cake, just make sure you speak at a proper volume and don't sound like a complete idiot and you will be fine. I worked at BBY for about six months.

If this is your first interview, don't show up in shambles... bring your resume too even if they don't care

Alright.

But I don't have any work experience...at all (sans volunteer work).

Then use volunteer work to fill it out... it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. It's good practice to prepare for the future jobs you'll apply for and do need to have a resume lest you plan on being a BB employee for the rest of your life.

Put it on there. Include your schooling. Anything at all to fill the page- the point of this interview is to put you over the top of the other guy with no work experience, no resume, and a polo shirt. If they only have a few positions available, and enough people show up with resumes and nice clothing, who do you think they're going to go with? People get these jobs because of all kinds of stupid reasons like that. I got my first job (Gamestop) because I wore a nice shirt and the other guy didn't. Really.

Also, wear a nice button-up shirt. Dressing one level nicer than you'll have to in the job is ALWAYS a good idea for an interview.

While in the interview, when they do the mock "I'm a customer and you're the salesperson" portion, keep in mind that upselling products and adding additional items like the extended warranty are the #1 priority.

Example: The interviewer pretends to be a father looking to buy his son, going off to college for the first time, a PC for his dorm room. Aside from the obvious computer/LCD monitor combination, you should also think: Printer, surge protector, speakers, an ergonomic keyboard, a case of 100 blank CDs/DVDs...

Desktop PCs are a relatively low margin item, so if you can show that you would be good at getting the customer to buy (in their own interest, of course) high margin items like surge protectors and blank discs, you're practically guaranteed the job. And extended warranties are a necessity - they are 100% profit for the company.

7 years ago or however long it's been since I worked at Best Buy, they asked me a few ethics questions, such as "if you caught a coworker stealing, what would you do?". Be prepared for a question similar to that

Do yourself a favor and invest in a decent pair of slacks, dress shoes and a shirt and tie. Jeans, shorts or anything that indicates a casual attitude on your part can be a death sentence during an interview.

sony wega 27"
2 JBL main speakers
JBL Center Speaker
2 JBL Rears
Receiver
Car Amp

then my mom bought a new tv and dvd player.

i also bought the service plans on everything and those $60 service plans on the TVs costed me about $3.

this was back in like 2001 summer.

Make yourself sound like an eager "yes-man" and you'll get the job. Retail isn't for free spirits.

Be prepared to push extended warranties, overpriced cables and $100 anti-virus installs like your job depends on it. Wait, your job does depend on it.

5 percent over cost.

saved about $1600.

I'm pretty surprised they would implicitly tell you what they're paying for their stock. I would think that they have lots of discounts and special deals with suppliers since they move so much product.

well they wouldn't tell us what they are paying but you could figure out by price scanning with your employee code in the system heh.

when i quit nothing happened. when i was in there shopping for my stuff i talked to my manager and told him that i had to adjust my schedule cause school was coming up, and i could only work friday - sunday cause i didn't leave campus during the week. and i already knew that in order to work there you had to at least work 2 days out of thurs, fri, and saturday.

so i was 'forced to quit' kind of. i knew i was quitting all along and didnt care at all, this was all my plan. i already had another job and was working 2 jobs while at best buy.

i gotta say though it was funny how my mom and i were in there with a fucking flatbed... didn't even know best buy had those for customers.

Well I suppose it worked out then. I won't be doing that, but I had one girl tell me who worked at BB when I said I got a PS3 Game -'you paid $60 for that? The markup is ridiculous, I paid like $30 for mine"....

I think cost basis for video games (xbox and ps) is $52 when they come out. So the discount wouldn't do much: $54.60

She lied. There's next to no markup on all recorded media (at the store employee level anyways).

Good luck, worked at BB for 7 years ('92-'99-Shipping&Receiving). My gift for 5 years of employment. :hmm:
A few months after the store opened, I ended up shaking the hands of Best Buys founder & CEO Richard 'Dick' Schulze & his wife.

They won't care about certs or lack of them... they want to know if you can sell a 6' HDMI cable for $75 with a Best Buy protection plan.
