I don't reject PSP automatically, but there are only a few situations where I would even consider one.

those are:

1) the item is deeply discounted as a return, or possibly refurbed
AND
2) I expect the item to remain useful for 5 years or more
AND
3) the item is expensive to buy and repair
AND
4) I don't expect to want to upgrade the item anytime soon
AND
5) I don't expect the price of the item to drastically fall over the next 5 years

OR

6) I have so much money in my pocket that I can figure out what to do with it

I have never, ever had a problem with Best Buy and their extended warranty. Never. And I have bought a few of them.

I have had a 52" HDTV monitor replaced by a 55"HDTV (intergrated) two years after the pruchase. I got a brand new Canon i960 for a broken Canon that was almost 2 1/2 years old. I have had computers completely rebuilt.

No messing around, no arguing, no bu!!sh!t. You just have to know who to talk to. Going to an employee, or department manager will be a waste of time. The store manager, or head office will get results.

The guys in the store have to offer the plan... fine... two minutes of my time is no big deal.

:)

so buying an item from Best Buy is wrong (the crime) and I deserve a PSP (the ticket) because I'm stupid. gotcha.

edit: cleared up for the noobs.

Didn't the Common Wisdom at one time state you always want a PSP with a laptop? Seems I read that somewhere at one time in the past. Have notebook computers evolved to the point where psps are as much a waste of money on laptops as they are on towers?

That analogy made no sense

CC companies often offer additional free warranty on top of the manufacturer's. Another reason why I hardly pressured the customer beyond the initial "NO" is that the cost of BB's warranty is too much, ie $300 for 3yrs to insure a $800 computer

You're dense, stupid, or both.

The field officer enforces policy, not decides it. His lt tells him to pull over and ticket anyone going 6 MPH over the speed limit. He does his job, or he finds a new one.

The Best Buy cashier enforces policy, not decides it. His manager tells him to offer PSPs to anyone coming through his checkout line. He does his job, or he finds a new one.

Clear enough?

I think PSPs have got more expensiveon a lot of items over the years... like car leases. I would expect to pay close to 50% of the price of a laptop for an extended warranty. It's not really a warranty - it's insurance, so if there's any policies that consistently pay out to the customer, the price HAS TO go up.

I do think that people who get angry at the initial mention of a service plan need some sort of stability training courses. However, I have no problem if you blow up on some guy who won't take your 15th 'No' to mean that the next 15 tries are also going to result in the same 'No'.

PSP's on most towers can be a waste, because parts are so cheap and easy to replace. But I know a few friends who bought laptops and have little things go wrong with them, like USB ports going bad from wear and tear. Also, I've seen dead pixels on LCD screens. Good thing is if an item needs to be repaired for a 4th time, its gets replaced for a new product with the no lemon policy. Some of the people I know are on their third repair for little stuff like I mentioned (usb ports, etc.). One more and thy're getting a new laptop...not a bad deal :D

he could probably make more working as a Home Depot cashier (which usually start at $10 an hour) and never have to bother customers if they want a PSP with their plywood.

Yes. You can only make that comment about telemarketing.

I've never had a problem turning down an extending warranty. I just say "No thanks" and there isn't any more discussion about it. Perhaps most of you are exaggerating. If an employee asks you if you want an extended warranty plan don't blow a fuse, it isn't the end of the world. OH NO I WASTED 1 MINUTE. Seriously, some of you need to relax.

oh and nan0bug is a smart guy

I agree. I did find it ludicrous when they tried to sell me a $30 PSP on a $20 Microsoft Optical Mouse, but I just said "no, that's okay, don't need it."

It's when they try to sell me crap I don't want or need, like cables and stuff. Or when they try to tell me things like, "bittorrent is actually a virus; it disables all your network security so it can work," and, "Windows XP is by far a better operating system than any form of Linux," and, "BestBuy's optimization service is actually a $15,000 piece of software that will make your computer boot up in 30 seconds and run 3 times as fast, and you can't find it on the internet." I like the last one the best. Do you honestly think if such a program existed some warez-minded employee wouldn't make a copy for him/herself and then distribute it via bittorrent/IRC/eMule/etc?

i dont mind the warranty speils (sp?). the thing i hate is when they take advantage of customers who are not exactly technology-saavy and sell them crap they dont need i.e monster cables with a VCR or some crap like that. i dont mind shopping there because i know what i am looking for and have no problem saying no.
