Best Buy doesn't want you trading in your PS3 for a Slim

Joystiq is reporting and Kotaku confirms that Best Buy is offering free games in lieu of exchanging a recently purchased PS3 for a PS3 Slim. The three games? Infamous, MLB 09 The Show, Killzone 2.

I don't know why you would want to trade the original design for a slim in the first place. It's not as if there's any difference between the two other than size.

well for starts, it is $300 (cheaper) and comes with a bigger HDD. that right there is reason alone.

Plus it has HDMI-CEC and HD audio bitstreaming. I can't think of a reason you _wouldn't_ trade in a non-BC PS3 for one.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't want you to trade in your fat PS3 considering that you've probably already opened it and they won't be able to re-sell it as new (though some stores may try, and then they'll end up with angry customers).

Personally, I don't like returning something that I've opened unless it's defective, because then someone else is taking a loss through no fault of their own. But hey, if this means I'll be able to find a brand new open box fat PS3 at Best Buy for $200 or so, I won't complain.

<Edit>Talking about durability exclusively here</Edit>

While the fat PS3s have been quite durable, PS2s were absolute garbage, comparable to the 360. Maybe the Slims will be like their heavier brother, but the memory of the PS2 is still rather fresh in my mind and may give me pause to get rid of a rather proven platform for one that may or may not be flaky. Honestly, if it was Nintendo I would completely agree with you, neither Sony nor MS have a track record that screams to me to trust a new design they offer by default(rather unfortunately, this is the reason I don't have a BC PS3 now, I wasn't going to buy into what I saw as a likely unreliable platform at $500).

i'd have to think an open, non-defective game console would carry a restocking fee for that purpose.

Me too, were I Best Buy I'd charge a restocking fee.

Best Buy Return Policy

Exchange and Return Period
Exchange or return your item anytime from the original purchase date within the timeframe below:

* 14 days for computers, monitors, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, and radar detectors
* 30 days for all other products
* 45 days for all products for Reward Zone Program Premier Silver members

...

Original receipt
To help facilitate the return, bring the original receipt as well as photo identification for all exchanges, returns, price matches and warranty repair services.

Restocking fee
A restocking fee is applicable in some product categories, unless you are a Reward Zone Program Premier Silver member, the item is defective, or the fee is prohibited by law. The restocking fee charges are:

* 25% for Special Order Products, including appliances
* 15% for opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS navigation and in-car video systems
* 10% for Apple® iPhones

Not surprisingly most of the items that have a restocking fee are items that people would want to "rent" for free - things you'd take on a trip. They used to not have restocking fees at all... but as is typical with customer-friendly store policies, restrictions are added over time because of abuse. Their lack of a restocking fee on game consoles is what's forcing them to give people a free game.

Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack this thread with talk about restocking fees.

i think it's within the realm of the topic at hand.

i'm pretty surprised, personally. i thought all electronics carried a fee, anymore. does best buy actually sell open box consoles, or do they just send them back?

I was reading on gaf there was some difference between the audio encoding in the PS3 phat and the slim.. not sure which is better though...

As erwos noted:
"Plus it has HDMI-CEC and HD audio bitstreaming. I can't think of a reason you _wouldn't_ trade in a non-BC PS3 for one."

The Slim is better in every way, on paper.

The only unknown is whether they messed up something in the redesign, which is unlikely but possible for any new hardware.

They should add consoles to restocking fees. Too many people abuse that just like TV's or A/C's or BBQ's during the summer time. I used to work at Home Depot and you wouldn't believe some of the A/C's and BBQ's people would try to return.
