Best budget digital camera?

I am wondering what the best digital camera is out there.. something with a good price/performance ratio. What is the best camera I can get, considering all the features for around $200-300?

We get this question about once a day on GH. I'd recommend you use the search function or take a look at DPreview.com. In that price range, check out Canon's PowerShot A40. Or, perhaps if you want something smaller, the Canon PowerShot S200 Digital Elph.

I personally own a Canon G2, so I am partial to Canon.

Another consideration would be a Fuji. I'm not sure what in their line falls in your budget, but they seem to offer more optical zoom for the same price...normally 6x as compared to 3x from others. Just a thought.

the best camera you can probably get for that price range is the canon a40, which i think can be had for around $250. i personally went for the fuji 2600, which is a good camera as well, and i got it for about $200.

Doesn't the A40 only save in a lossy compressed format (jpg or mpg). I wouldn't have a camera that couldn't save in some lossless file format as well.
.bh.

the Canon Powershot A40 is awesome. I bought this camera and it's awesome. No complaints at all. Like someone jsut said, it doesn't save in lossless form, but if you don't know what that is or don't care or don't even need to deal with it, it's not a problem.

To get that, you usually have to get something more expensive like an S30, S40, G2, etc.

As 2 megapixel cameras go the A40 isn't bad but i'd look at the olympus too. From what I gather the A40 uses a sony CCD that they use in their mavica cameras. Not as good as what Canon puts in there S30s, S40s and G2s which are better. Yeah...mo' money.
