I bought a HP Photosmart 2010 multifunction back in 2007 or so, for ~$140. It faxes/scans/copies/prints. I've put just under 6000 pages through it. I've always appreciated the fact that the print heads are part of the cartridge and thus are regularly replaced and the fact that I can print with abandon even when it tells me ink is low and a new cartridge should be swapped in.
Just something to keep in mind while shopping. :)

I would go with Brother or Canon.

HP/Epson and some of the other big manufacturers rip you off crazy on ink. They specifically make their printers to use as much ink as possible so you spend more on refills. Epson was involved in a class action lawsuit over this, not sure if anyone else was. I would avoid HP and Epson.

Before you buy any printer, check to see how cheap refills are for it.

If you don't need color, I would go with a laser printer. Toner is cheaper and lasts more. Rather buy a used laser printer than inkjet anyday.

I've been extremely happy with several HP laser printers over the past 2 decades.

bubble or ink jets though i've had a mixed bag with several different manufacturers.... none really stick out as overall great

Even if they aren't part of the cartridge it depends on the printer model on whether you can continue printing or not.

Having the print head on the cartridge also makes refills more difficult since you have to make sure you don't accidently damage them because spills can short the circuit, have to blot gently as possible after refills so head/tiny nozzles don't get scratched/damaged.

I've been pleasantly surprised with both the Lexmark S315 and S415. For $58 it's an outstanding MF unit.

get a brother multifunction laser printer. I have the mfc-7840w best printer purchase i've ever made in my life. drivers are great, toner cartridges are reasonably priced. I will never ever buy a HP inkjet again, EVER. my last HP would just report that i'm out of ink a month after i replace the cartridge, and even when i shake the cartridge i can still hear the ink swishing around. Even when the color ink cartridges are out, it would outright refuse to let me print even in black or grayscale. total scumbags.

Love the Cannon output quality but the inkjets are expensive to run and I had an MX860's ink cartridge housing shorted out after 2 years of light use. Cost more to fix than to buy a new one. Doesn't mean they will all do that, but I went with a Brother laser this time. So far so good. I'll get a cheap Cannon at Walmart to do pictures again if I have a mind to.
