1984 was pritty good but i felt that it went into too much detail. the book could have been shortened by 2/3 w/o losng any of the core contents

I thought the details were what made is scarier. Also with more details, there's more to compare with any point in time.

One detail that definately could have been shortened was the excerpt from Goldstien's book. That must have taken me about and hour or two to read 25 pages. I'd start a page, read a few sentences, wander off, and then start over again.

I'm reading Anna Karenina right now, it's pretty damn good, I'm about 2/3 of the way through. It's gripped me pretty well.

Last time that happened was with The Brothers Karamazov.

Funny, 'cause I didn't finish Crime and Punishment nor War and Peace. I guess even the best authors are hit-or-miss with me.... or maybe I've got undiagnosed ADHD :p

Also really good is Augustine's Confessions. And Wuthering Heights.

LOL thats what I mean. some parts of the book dragged on and I'd just stop reading for the day at the end of the chapter. maybe i just read too slow?

i have to totally dissagree. we read this book in HS and it totally sucked. iactually read it again 2 years later and thought it sucked again. Holden is a winy lil b!tch who needs a good kick in the nuts because life sucks and ned better get used to it. /rant

LOTR + The Hobbot
To Kill A Mockingbird
Stranger in a strange land

i think the reason why its so popular is because almost everyone can relate to Holden. Personally, I wouldnt put it in my top 10 list.

I thought Catcher In The Rye was a great book. Just like quirky mentioned, a lot of people can relate to it. Assassins, internet forum posters, etc...

I am a big Stephen King fan though, and I always recommend Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The movie is great, and I think the book is better. Right after that, The Green Mile is also great. Not his typical horror, but interesting reading.

And, Tom Clancy's Without Remorse is also another good book. You don't even really need to read the other ones in his series.
