Best board choice for midrange server?

My boss has asked me to spec out a midrange server. More specifically, he said he wants "at least a terabyte of space, at least a gig of ram, at least two processors" - in other words, he just wants something clearly better than we have now. (I've already patiently explained that "a terabyte of space" is not within our budget on a system like this.)

What's the best choice here? Dual PIII Xeon? 760-MPX? Any particular boards to look for or to avoid?

What are it to be used for??

Eg file server for 1000 people, then its more the disks and subsystem than the processors that need to be selected.
Database server, Anandtech uses AMD MP with Tyan board and are quite happy(to judge from the articles 😀)

Something were 4 processor will be nescesary, then you will have to go with a PIII XEON, Not P4..

If you want a midrange do it all server, i would suggest a Tyan board (Chipset MPX) with dual Atlon MP(XP) .
Its quite cheap and a great performer.

For those specs, I'd seriously look at buying a Dell. However, if you plan on doing it yourself, then a the tyan tiger or thunder mp are both good choices.
