Best Blu-Ray Ripping Software & How to Use Downloaded Videos

Hi

I was wondering if someone could point me towards the best Blu-Ray and DVD ripping software. In other words, I want to be able to simply put in my blu-ray disc into my blu-ray player and save the video on a local hard disk. I'm guessing any software that can do this for blu-ray can also do it for DVDs.

My other question is how this kind of stuff is saved as on my HDD. I've seen 2 types of video downloads on the internet. Some download as one big AVI or MPEG (etc) file. They typically lack chapters or special features but they're easy to work with. Others download in tons of small (say 15mb) RAR files. What do you do with this? Do I select all the files and just extract?

If you guys could answer both questions it'd be great.

I am willing to pay money for the Blu-Ray software. I am running Windows 7 64bit. ( Just in case some software still doesnt support 64bit)

clonedvd anydvd hd the latest version should let you access the disc - then you need a nice ripping app - but why? this is 25GB+ - insanity to store that much per movie -

7zip or winrar - hit the .rar or first file and it will extract them all. more files allow less chance for total file error and more parallelism but i have no idea what you are talking about otherwise

I use AnyDVD HD to rip HD DVD and Blu-ray movies.. it's by far the best out there that gets consistently updated.

For archived files, use 7zip.

Whatever type videos you see out there, who knows.. most people do things wrong on the internet. If you want high definition material, you should be aiming for H.264 encoded video stored in a MKV container.

AnyDVD HD is the best ripping software, lets you create .iso's from BluRays and DVD to be played from HD.

DVDFab is a good editor, lets you remove tracks, special features, sound tracks you don't want to conserve space. It's pretty buggy with BluRay and crashes but with DVDs its pretty flawless (about 20% of blurays crash this program), it also lets you repackage the contents back into an .ISO after you trimmed the fat.

DaemonTools lets you mount the .ISO's to play as if it was just inserted into a disk drive.

Media Player Classic / Media Center Edition lets you play the .isos, bluray and dvd compatible.

Thats the setup I have on my media center PC, but be warned some of the software is expensive (AnyDVD is about $150 or so), but DaemonTools and Media Player Classic is free.

I use MakeMKV which rips to an uncompressed MKV file, and thn when that's done I re-encode with Handbrake.

Both programs are free as well, which is nice.

OK, thanks for the help so far.

To clarify on AnyDVD : I need to purchase AnyDVD HD AND CloneDVD right? With those I'll just save the data as a normal WMVs, MP4s etc.

What is the difference with daemon tools? Their site says "With DAEMON Tools you can back up your physical CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray discs into “virtual discs” or so called “disc image” files, which run directly on your hard drive".

The way they make it sound, I dont need AnyDVD or anything else.

thegpfury, is handbrake needed? Or is it just to re compress the mkv files? My idea is to get one some large HDDs so size isnt a terrible concern.

Finally, corkyg, I was a little confused with the site you linked. It had 3 different routes that all seemed to end up with the same finish. Considering they had links to 'free' software, what is the benefit of moving over to AnyDVD?

AnyDVD has DVD functionality built in. I don't think you need to buy both.

Regardless, if you have AnyDVD you can use DVDShrink to make ISO's of your DVD's with whatever you want (no extras/extras etc).

DAEMON tools allows you to mount ISO's, so your PC sees the ISO as a disc. I don't think it rips anything? I would just grab virtual clone drive by the same guys who make AnyDVD if you just need to mount.

I prefer uncompressed with MakeMKV, but if you want to compress you can use handbrake or ripbot or a multitude of other programs.

Handbrake is only needed if you want to re-encode so they don't take up 25+gb a movie. Otherwise, you can just play the straight MKV files.

wmv/mp4=inferior
mkv is best
at 25gb a bluray to not lose quality etc you can fill a drive fast. whether its worth the effort is your call.

OK then, I'll try out makeMKV once I get my blu-ray drive and I'll go from there. I guess its free for now but will later be made into a paid version once it has left the beta. I'll use hand brake to encode.

If this is incompatible or something I'll make the jump to AnyDVD HD. After all, with software that expensive, it makes sense to try out the alternatives first.

Thank you all for the help.

Encoding BluRay on that Althon is going to take forever 😛

Lots of suggestions here, this is just what I use:

AnyDVD HD
ImgBurn - to rip to ISO image
Ripbot264 - to convert BR to 1080p MKV file, yes it's compressed but most I can keep the 1080p HD video, AC3 audio and most files end up being less than 10GB.

I agree with abaez. Go with AnyDVD HD. It is the best solution for reading the Blu-ray movies. The only thing I disagree with him is on using Daemon-Tools for mounting the ISOs. I used to use it until very recently. The software has been getting crappier. For videos, especially with AnyDVD HD, you should use the free Virtual CloneDrive from Slysoft (the same ones who make AnyDVD).

then you need a nice ripping app - but why? this is 25GB+ - insanity to store that much per movie

Because this way you can setup something like a HTPC which has all your movies and you don't need to go find the movie disc and insert it. You let the software on the HTPC deal with organizing your movies and allow you to select and play it. For a quick demo, mine does the following for my movies:

movies.jpg

Then clicking on the movie poster does this:

movies2.jpg

And then if I that really is the one I want to watch, I just click one more time and it starts playing...

The point of BluRay is not just the HQ video but at least in my opinion, getting the full HD sound. That's the reason I use DVDFab... do a full rip to my hardrive. Grab the largest .m2ts and it contains the DTS-MA or DD TrueHD. My receiver can decode the audio.
I tried using MakeMKV and my media tank simply wont work with those MKV's but I am sure HTPC's proably wont have an issue.
