I'm trying to buy a laser printer for my home office. Can anyone recommend a good reliable one? I am currently using a brother MLF series for faxing/printing/copying/scaning and it works great, but I need something a little more dedicated for faster printing. I have used HPs in the past and like how economic their cartridges are. And I have used Brother which is also nice.

I'd suggest a used HP 4XXX series printer from the 4000 on up they are tanks and common workgroup printers examples include the 4000, 4050, 4100, 4250 & so on.

I also recommend the HP 4000 series highly. They are cheap, require only minimal maintenance, and provide years of reliable service. You would have to get these used on eBay or from a local seller. It's easy to find them for about $50 and if you're lucky that price includes shipping and upgrades like a network card, envelope feeder, extra paper tray, etc.

OEM toner is also very inexpensive:

Toner $25.00 / 10,000 pages = ~1/5 of a cent per page

HP 4000 and 4050 are what I recommend. I believe 4100 and higher require the use of "chipped" toner cartridges.

what does "chipped" toner cartridge mean?
one of the adjacent offices has a 4050 I believe. I was looking on ebay but noticed there's a 4050tn, 4050n, 4050t, never knew there was so much choice!

Basically a chipped Toner cartridge means you must use a HP OEM refill cartridge that costs much more than a generic third party refilled cartridge. Either that or figure out a way to beat the chip. There may be a way, I don't know. But what the hay, just buy some less than 4100 model number designation, and you avoid the chip problem.
