I don't think it's illegal if you record it for your personal viewing but if you share it that's a different story...

what's your definition of sharing?

i can't bring a recorded tape of an episode to somebody's house and have 50 buddies viewing the episode with me?

Yeah you can, but you can't make 50 duplicates of the tape and give one to each of your friends.
