Best benchmark & testing utilities

Hey all,

I'm working on a deal for this chip, a 3.2 E socket 478. I've got a few quick questions. The person from whom I am buying it, bought it 2nd hand as well, so while I'm probably gonna get a good price, I have no way of knowing if this chip has been abused or refurbed or is quirky etc. He currently has no way of testing it, so he is gonna ship it and I'd like to run some test for stability, etc. So a few questions for you, I have....

Do you guys feel that a chip either works right or it doesn't?

What are the best tests to run and what should I be looking for? To boot, this particular SL is a known OC'er (a simple google search shows me unlocked multipliers and people literally hitting like 4.2 and 4.4 and what not). So this could be construed as good and yet bad for me as I don't know if this chip has just been roasted for the last 2 years (manufacturing date of 03'). It's pretty much on the way, so I'm not looking for "Pentium HT is dead technology" type comments 🙂 but more or less thoughts and advice on my questions. Thanks.

Yeah, generaly either a chip is good, or it doesn't work at all. Dual prime95 is a good test, as is S&M. I would run dual prime95 for at least 12 hours. Hitting over 4ghz may be possible, but really not all that likely. Doesn't hurt to try though.

Please buy the chip BEFORE you decide to test it at 4ghz. Running normal benchmarks is fine to test a processor in order to decide if you want to buy it. OVERCLOCKING IS NOT!!!!

Thanks Stevty. And I hear ya Leigh. No one's implying that I am going to kick the crap out of it, I don't think though 😀. I'm not an unscrupulous trader (is that the word I'm looking for?) In fact now that I think about it, that's kind of off topic from my question....

So I'll run Prime95 and that should do it?

I wasn't implying he try to hit 4ghz before buying it. I also don't think it's likely it will hit 4ghz anyway, but that it was worth a try anyway(after it's paid for).
