Yes, definately. If the HD 2900XT would drop to around $350 or lower, that would be a better buy, but I wouldn't rely on that happening anytime soon with the way pricing is right now.

With that 8800GTS, you're getting the best price currently available on a 640MB model and a decent overclock (although you'll probably want to OC it more yourself.)

Nothings going to touch the BFG at that price.

Even the 320 GTS beats the HD2900, so the 640OC is just that much better.

Don't spew that crap, Wreckage. If you've looked at any benchmarks with the latest drivers, the HD 2900XT is considerably ahead of the 640MB GTS in alot of games (in fact, surprisingly, some of the very games HardOCP "tested" - Oblivion AND BF2142)

HardOCP finds both 320MB / 640MB GTS are faster in BF2142 and Oblivion....

X-Bit labs finds that, in BF2142 with 4xAA/16xAF...

@ 1280x1024: HD 2900XT is 7% faster avg / 30% faster min framerate
@ 1600x1200: HD 2900XT is 17% faster avg / 14% faster min framerate
@ 1920x1440: HD 2900XT is 45% faster avg / 32% faster min framerate

In Oblivion, Outdoors w/ HDR + 16xAF

@ 1280x1024: 8800GTS is 3.5% faster avg / HD 2900XT has 28% faster min framerate
@ 1600x1200: HD 2900XT is 9% faster avg / 46% faster min framerate
@ 1920x1200: HD 2900XT is 6% faster avg / 48% faster min framerate

The only games the HD 2900XT is really beaten by the GTS are those where it has clear driver problems (such as being slower than the X1950XTX.) But in general, the HD 2900XT is faster than the GTS 640MB and shouldn't even be compared to the 320MB card.

This is the review you want to be looking at (apples to apples, newest drivers, tons of games tested): http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...-extreme_14.html#sect0

yeah, this ain't about what videocard brand you like or love, this is about a poster who wants the best advice he can get. If he can get a ati 2900xt for near 320$ he should get one, like for example the 2900xt they had on sale at BB.

- oh and the card the OP posted isn't a bad card at all for that price, definately worth buying imo.
