Sounds like what I need... Sound is very important to me. About the variations, it looks like there are a lot of choices for Hero. What the the ~$400 version do better than the ~$200 version?

I just want a reliable MoBo that's easily OC'd to about 4.4 GHz... Has fast RAM.. I'm basically considering any SLI capability as a "nice to have" since I doubt I'll use it. Could be plugging in AMD or Nvidia card... Not sure yet.

A bang for the buck mb isn't going to be a $200-400 mb. You're asking for a high end overclocking mb.

I'd like the best MoBo I can get for no more than $200. I do plan to "mildly" OC a 4770 to 4.3-4.4 GHz. Would also like a recommendation for a MoBo for no more than $120, which I won't need to OC at all.

I'm also looking for the best deal on a 1150 motherboard but I want it to have SLI.

The ASRock Extreme3 is only $114 on new egg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157372

I can't really speak to its reliability though.

There's a BIOSTAR motherboard for $139:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138380

I'm not familiar with BIOSTAR but it's the only board with 5 stars.

The MSI Z87-G45 is the most reviewed board but it's a little more expensive at $159:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130693

I think the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H is probably the best buy:

$119 after mail in rebate

That is the wrong link... here is the Gigabyte board: Link

If I were getting a 1150 general purpose OC board, that's the one I would pick (except in mATX... but essentially the same thing.)

OP, there are many good choices below $200, some not even near that. Find a board that offers the features you want or need and roll with it... :D

Here's the AsRock Fatal1ty at $129. It has a lot of features.

The number one thing I worry about is reliability. I feel like when I look on newegg many people get DOA boards (maybe those are just the vocal minority who post). This board has decent reviews in a small sample size but other AsRock boards have quite a few DOA reports . Maybe I should stick with asus or gigabyte

I really like my Gigabyte boards, I wouldn't hesitate to get one. I just bought my first ASRock board for a budget build, it saved me $15 over an equivalent Gigabyte board... we will see how it does.

I have to take the DOA reports with a grain of salt... you don't really know how big the sample size is and, as you say, most people won't post a 'Everything's fine!' feedback... only 'This board sucks!' I also wonder if there wasn't some... uh, 'operator error' in some of the problem or DOA boards.

The ASRock Extreme4 and Extreme6 both got good reviews for the 1155 versions, IDK about the 1150 ones.

I'm more than happy w/ my Maximus Hero, my newegg review of it was either 4 or 5 eggs, can't recall which.

I just built a system with a 4770k and the ASUS Maximus VI Hero and so far am very pleased with it. Newegg is selling them right now for 189.99 (price after 15.00 promo code) good today but I think they are pretty frequent with this board as I got the same deal when I bought a few weeks back.

Asrock Z87 Extreme4. Newegg just dropped the price on it to $128.

MicroCenter has them for $120 + $6 shipping - pretty much a wash pricewise compared to Newegg, but I think Microcenter has a better return policy.

Edit; Newegg has this board now for $118 and free shipping as long as you're good with the slow boat delivery. Couldn't resist at this price - got a decent deal on an I5 4440 a few days back also.

i recommend the msi z87 gd 65 gaming
it supports sli, i have 2 gtx 770s running
its not expensive, has got several extra switches for power, reset, easy oc and dual uefi
if you don´t need those, the msi z87 gd 45 is about the same thing without the switches
it has got special sound and lan chips, can´t say i´d hear a difference, but the killer2200 lan chip is definitely good
it improved ping in world of tanks for me from 60-70ms on an amd am3+ board to 20-30ms now
it looks great, black with red highlights
don´t know the american prices, but google should, i paid 160€
normally its about 1:1 or some more $ than €

Best bang for the buck will definitely be the MSI Z87 GD45 as the price to performance and features is amazing. People with the board really seem to love them, I have the GD65 and MPOWER and love mine. Since it is the 4770 non-K I would definitely recommend the GD45 even more, though the GD65 would be a good step up if you need.

I prefer Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H to MSI G45, because of the additional USB ports, 2 eSATA ports and me not trusting Killer chip.

I am not sure it worth $25 though. Also, I think MSI has a better audio chip, no?

I recently purchased a Gigabyte GA-Z87m-D3H to go with my 4770k. I had a lot of problems with it until I flashed it to the F8 BIOS. It's been perfect since then (2 days ago). I don't know if the shipping F6 was corrupt in my board, or just a bad BIOS revision but the flash to F8 was an incredible cure. I was even having errors when I was in the BIOS so I tend to think my board's BIOS had a problem.

I usually wait a week or so before I start overclocking so I know my current stock configuration is stable.

The F8 uEFI is the most stable out of all of them on the MB....I've tried them all as I got my board at launch.

Good to hear. I've been an Asus guy for many, many years but decided to give Gigabyte a shot. I'm glad I hung in there and flashed to F8 because things seem to be rock solid now. I'm getting itchy to start overclocking...
