best bang-for-the-buck p4 cooler

hey all. i've got a 2.53 @ 2.94 and i'd like to get a new fan/heatsink for it. my computer is pretty loud as is so i don't think getting anything a little louder than the stock intel will hurt me much. i've heard that the stock intel is about 2400rpm so i'm guessing something around 3-4k rpms would give off something below 40dbs?

i'd like some suggestions from people that have nice cpu cooling and that don't make too much noise. i'm not even sure how loud 40dbs is but i'm assuming that's pretty loud. 🙂

thanks.

Well, if you want the best bang for buck P4 cooler then I say a Volcano 7+ is pretty good.

And yes, 40dB is pretty loud for a fan, but not Delta loud. 😉

just use Arctic Silver paste and mod the fan to disable the variable rpm temp sensor so itll run 3400rpm at all times.

hows that for cheap? 😉

A little lapping won't hurt either. 😉

best bang 4 the buck-

1) lap the stock HS
2) use Artic Silver
3) mod the bracket and mount a 92mm fan on it

sounds like fun anyway.

🙂 that sounds very cheap! i have some arctic silver already but how does one go about disabling the rpm temp sensor? wow, the stock fan can run 3400rpm? sweet.

does modding the rpm sensor involve physically doing something to it or maybe a software of some sort?

. . . thank god for these forums. 🙂

Use the Intel HSF with AS.

I have tried many others, no significant improvement. And the Intel HSF is nice an quiet.

on the retail cooler......

1) carefully remove the holo-decal
2) find the thermal diode
3) short it out so it has constant contact and "bypasses" the diode (solder?)
4) replace the holo-decal

HTH 😀

thanks thugs but i couldn't find the thermal diode. i only see the fan cable soldered onto the board. i haven't checked MY fan but i took one apart at work and couldn't find it.

there doesn't seem like there's much to work with.

2 deg doesn't seem like THAT much of an improvement. Although it can mean a system is stable or not if u bump it up 1-2 mhz. One thing i was wondering was how much a decent heatsink and fan will lower the temp by compared to the stock Intel fan. Cuz i would rather make a free mod of the stock Intel fan rather than fork over 30-40 for a decent heatsink and fan that will make negligible difference. I'm sure the good ones make a diff, but i was wondering how much. Thanks.

success!

the stock fan for the 2.53 doesn't give much room to work with. you have to somehow "make" a little room. in my case, i just found some kind of bladed plier. sorry i don't know the name for it but just use whatever that'll get the job done. so i took a little off (you can't even tell after the sticker's back on), and proceeding with the little dissection.

it was actually a lot easier than i had thought. having a soldering iron really helps too. i basically "pushed" the diode over with the hot iron and the sucker just slid off.

then i shorted it and that was that. finito. hahaha, i don't know what the hell i'm talking about. can you tell? 🙂

what i do know is that my fan rpm is at least 3500 and my cpu temp is 3 degrees lower at idle. i haven't primed it to see what my load temps are but i'm a happy camper.

by comparison, it sounds just a little bit louder. i really have to listen for it. i've got 4 other fans in there so i'm not sure what exactly is making the noise. i guess i'll stick with this for now, or until big8oy gets an alpha to play with so i can see. 😀

special thanks to thugs and btw, what "quiet" 80mm fan do you have? so the alphas are the way to go if you're overclocking? how much louder, if any, is the alpha with a quiet 80mm fan than the stock one?

okay, i'm beginning to think that doing this didn't help. 10 mins into prime and my cpu temp is at 51. that seems a little high to me.

does a good application of as3 make much of a difference? i lazily applied mine the first time, didn't use nail polish or whatever to get everything off.

not much of a biggie. . . but help?

52 now 🙁

okay. cleaned it up all nice and i'm getting 51 degrees at load but i have upped my fsb to 155. so i'm guessing the temp is the same because of the higher fsb?

i hope so, anyways. btw, my fan's at 3648rpm right now. pretty cool. 🙂

are my temps too high? sure i'm not under load all the time but when i am doing stuff, is 50+ degrees for a prolonged time okay?

Looks like an OK temperature to me.You can splurge on an Alpha 8942T with a quite 80mm fan.It will help a little 2-4C but not drop your temps 10C or nothing.51C at load is not too bad.Good case cooling surely does help.

Sweet!!! I just did the mod on the stock Intel fan and i'm at 31deg idle and 46deg at load. And i just applied the AS3. Hopefully it can drop some more when the as3 gets "worked in". That dropped like 5 deg at load from before i did the mod, so that is VERY cool. 😀

I actually screwd up when soldering the little temp block to short it. I actually took one side of the block off and thought i screwd up but i powered it up to see if it worked and the fan rpm said 3700, so i guess u can either short it or take that little block off completely and it will work. I guess 😱 But it worked either way.
