Geforce2 pro- $60
Geforce3 ti 200 - $120
Geforce4 4200 - $180

i'm putting together a new pc (1.2ghz duron) to replace my p3 667mhz w/ati radeon 32mb sdr.

by the geforce2 pro now and upgrade early next year when the gefroce3 ti200 will also be around $60? but that's like spending $120 anyway. so should i spend the $120 now? i play to play games at 1024x768x16bit, 2x AA and want at least 30 fps.

or never upgrade again for the life of the new pc (3years) and get the geforce4 ti4200? advantage is that it has directx 8, which will be useful future games. the other's dont.

your opinion?

I don't think the geforce 2 supports AA, does it?

Most benchmarks put the G4 4200 right in the range performace wise of a G3 Ti500, just from what I have seen. As more games start using DX8 features I would expect the 4200 to perform better as it has an extra shader over the Ti500.

Seems to me I read that the GF3 TI 200 can be OC to Geforce4 4200 perrformance levels. It was my choice.

It does, but it's really just a cheap driver hack nVidia implemented to help stave off the Voodoo 5 5500. The GeForce 3 Ti200 can now be found for just over $100, and can hit GeForce 3 Ti500 levels with simple overclocking. It cannot, however, hit the GeForce 4 Ti4200. In addition to the GeForce 3 Ti200, I would also suggest the Radeon 8500, which can now be found for just over $100 as well, and beats the GeForce 3 Ti500.

The Geforce 2 fully supports 2X or 4X AA. The Geforce Pro overclocked to a mild 220/450 should be able to maintain 30fps minimum at 1024 x 768 2x FSAA no problems with a 1.2GHz Morgan.

I'd go with the Ti4200. It can be overclocked quite a bit and is probably the best value.

WarCraft 3 won't require too much. It does, however, make use of the extra two textures in the rendering pass of Radeon cards. As such, I recommend a Radeon 7500. It costs about the same as a GeForce 2 Pro now, but outperforms it.

you can't compare direct OC levels between two different GFs

the GF4 range have better bandwidth saving techniques, this is why the GF4 ti4200 performs better than a GF3 Ti500 even though they have the same memory speed clock.
