best bang for the buck CPU?

Any thoughts? I'm probably going to moderately overclock also (no pelters!). Taking that into consideration, what do you guys think is the best CPU out there for the cost. AMD or Intel, probably AMD since they're cheaper. Also a motherboard to go along with it. Good overclocking features and reliability are #1 priority. ATA/100 would be nice, no other on board components. I'm hopefully going to build a new system, but don't want to spend a whole lot. My system is pretty outdated, I figure if I grab a cpu, mb, memory, and find a good video card for under $40 I should be set for a while. I'd rather wait until nVidia/Matrox/3dfx put out their next gen cards to spend some real money on those. I was waiting for a P4 but after reading some early reviews I figure they don't offer a whole lot for their price.

Best bang for the buck, intel? HA! Duron is definately the best bang for the buck. If you're lucky, you can get a gigahertz out of a $70 processor.

IMO, ATA/100 is all hype for the moment. There is very little performance gain, if any. Get a board that's great at overclocking and is very reliable.

Duron is awesome price and nice performance. Also has a good reputation for overclocking. Go w/the duron and the MSI PRO2. There is no diff between ATA 66/100. But since it's built into almost every motherboard you might as well get it.

You guys are all running tbirds I want to too! 🙂 I was looking at the prices and a 900 is only $165 right now. $70 more than a 800 Duron, not bad. Would you guys advise buying a system now or wait since the 760 is right around the corner?

Have a P3-700 cB0 that I run at 938MHz with 1.80v on CUSL2. Paid $215 for it here. Very happy with both price & performance.

bang for the buck? i think i picked up a pentium 100 for about $1. can you really say that a duron is 70x faster?

I too think that Duron is the way to go. Can't wait to replace my celeron 500 with a Duron 800. 🙂

been looking on that site that dandan gave, it's $220 before shipping for a duron 1000 pretested, abit kt7, and a super orb cooler. Not a bad deal. 128meg pc-133 sticks are running $69 on pricewatch. hm...
$360 for a 1ghz 256 meg system, not bad at all.

Dandan, the site you listed, Overclockerz Store, has an AWFUL reputation with a lot of buyers. Go to resellerratings.com, check them out. Do searches on this forum. Maybe you've had good luck with them, but given their reputation, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

I would defintly recommend a Duron, or a cheepr T-Bird, I still prefer the Abit KT7 as a mobo

...I have an Intel P-75 w/ motherboard I *part* with for a few clams...cheaper, on a MHZ basis, than those overpriced modern chips 🙂
